Works Perf aftermarket struts
#1
I just installed the new Works Performance Steeler struts last night but will have to wait until my engine is rebuilt for the test drive but when I rode a friends 400 w/ them on it was a HUGE improvement over stock. Anyway I made a few observations. The shaft is 1.25" longer than stock. If I could bottom out the Works strut by hand, which I can not, then that would mean it would have 1.25" of more travel than the stock. The stock piston can easily be pushed all the way in & it takes a minute to come back out just an inch or so. I could only collapse by hand the strut about 4" & it very quickly popped back out all the way. Very different than stock which hardly rebounded at all. On the bottom of the strut there is a valve stem like on a car tire for adding or removing pressure form 10 to 50PSI. I checked it new & it was 32PSI which they said was needed for about 2" of sag w/ the rider on board. You would never want to use stiff springs w/ this setup unless you weigh allot since the job of the spring to help bring back the proper ride heigth. What you would do if you planning allot of jumps is to boost the air pressure or reduce it if you want even a smoother ride. I dont think actually you will have to mess w/ it at all though since off of big jumps it's like landing on a soft pillow from what I hear. All I can say is it is a really smooth ride on Mikes quads & I hope mine reacts the same. I'll test it out on my 4.5' jump I have in my front yard. The installation was a snap. I did measure about 9.25" of travel from the top of the strut housing to where it would bottom out once completely istalled on the quad. There is a rubber bumper at the top that I guess would actually limit the travel by whatever amount it compresses to on really huge jumps I guess. The stock strut was fully extended & very stiff w/ just the weight of the quad, now w/ the Works stuts, it sag's about an inch w/ just the quad weight. I'll keep you posted.

Thats funny about the Nitrogen because I specifically asked them do I have to take them somewhere to change the air pressure or send them back or something like that & they told me I can just the air myself w/ my air compressor. Since this is the only fitting on the strut, I assume thats the place to check it or add or removed air. I'll call him again today just to double check. I talked to him yesterday & he said I have to keep the rubber bumper in there at the top. They were ony $229 for the set. Thats REALLY cheap in my opinion for what your getting. My friend spend way more than that for just one shock. They do sell rears but their expensive so thats why I'm getting PEP to custom rebuild my rear to my weight, riding style etc. There's about 20 questions you have to answer before they'll rebuild it for you. I think it's only going to be around $250 also. Works has a web pagehttp://www.worksperformance.com/Tech_Support/tech_support.html

One more thing I forgot to mention, people have said that these are even an improvement over the Fox non-adjustable aftermarket struts so if anyone is weighing getting the Fox or Works choose the Works, plus its adjustable w/ more travel.

Just to let you know, Works said it's ok to check pressure w/ a tire gauge & add air w/ the compressor & they added nitrogen just becuase thats what they had handy but air is just fine. There is oil in a seperate compartment so it wont come out like the oil emulsion type. Thats good news if you want a stiffer or softer ride.
