Default Riding with some Yamaha's

The last two Friday's I went riding up at Nemadji State Forest, MN. My buddy just bought a Wolverine and wanted to get some trail riding in, and I needed to get out some aggresion(only got to ride snowmobile twice this winter)!!! He kept telling me how I should've bought a Yamaha and my AC is too big and too slow. But, of course, I kept telling him that little 350 ain't gonna keep up with my 650 Twin. Well, guess what, when we were drag racing it was just about dead even Once we got up to 50 mph then I pulled away and of course waved bye bye to him. I can't believe that little thing can keep up. Granted we were riding on ice and snow and all I did was spin at first, but so did he.

Then last Friday we went and his other buddy was riding a Kodiak 400, and he could keep up pretty good too. Fortunately, he no longer tells me how my machine is bad and I should've got this or that. But now I can't give him crap either, unless we are gonna hit some mud or something, then he will be screwed. But I told him not to worry, once I get a couple of good pictures I will pull him out with my winch

My question is about the muffler mod. I can easily do this since my dad has a weldling shop at home, but should I? I want to be legal to ride on trails. The wolverine has a Pro Circuit pipe on it and it is louder than hell. It sounds good, but I know he is over the decibal limit. So, will doing the muffler mod to mine, make it too loud to run on trails too. Also, if I leave the spark arrestor alone it would still be fine in that aspect, correct???

I need more power

P.S. I also had to drag race my bro in-law last year to prove him wrong too. He kept telling me my Arctic Crap couldn't take his Grizzly. Well after one ride, when we got home he didn't say a peep. Hehehehehehe I love it!!!

It would be really really funny if you put a big bore kit on it then raced the freind with the wolvy. He would be like "What the heck did you do to that thing"!

I think you could get more power from an airbox mod and not have all that noise. Loud wheelers are what gives ATV's a bad rap. That, and the idiots that can't stay on the trails.

orrrrrrrrr..... you can throw in a cdi module and then blow him away right from the start since they give u a ton more bottom end.

the wolverine probably weighs about half as much as your 650 does. i wouldn't worry bout this at all drag race him on the tar so you both can hook up. i see you got a dynatek cdi in it which makes it have alot more horsepower and you got the 27 inch tires just like i got on mine and he probably has lil 24 or 25 inch tires and he will gain alot there on ya. and i see you only have the black spring are you sure the belt is tight enough? maybe you slipped it somewhere along the line burned it a lil and lost power there i would get the pink primary spring and a new belt to be on the safe side and make sure the belt tention is at specs. next time you drag race him put the stock 26 inch tires on you won't be dead even. lol i drag raced my buddies 660 grizz and i wooped him and he dragged a 700 polaris and he wooped the polaris so this 650 twin isn't any pooch by any means

I have had an AC500(gone) my Dad has three Ac's a 650 and 500, and a trv. I've now got a KQ.
I bought a 1997 wolerine...almost mint condition, not even a nick out of the paint on the frame..it was garaged...put just a few tens into it...FMF pipe was on it. That wolverine is a hot little quad..it will pass both 500's and slowly walk away.. they don't ever catch up. The 650 has it beat, but like you said, not by much. The KQ can take it the whole way from the line to 70 ...but still that 350 is an amesome quad(23 inch tires). I got it for under a grand and have been really impressed with it. I got it for my teenaged daughter, to get her a lighter quad to steer, and so she didn't have to worry about 4wheel drive. She loves it!

Thanks for the replies. I did do the air box mod already too. So I was thinking maybe opening up my exhaust would help the air box mod a little more. The black spring seems to be alright for now. I haven't had a chance to get in some really good mud though, but this summer I will take it to Red Top Trails by Mille Lacs Lake and test it out. I have the belt so that it squeels when in gear and not driving which is annoying, but seems to work well.

One question about the air box mod. I bought the dynojet kit and put in what was recommended and it seems to run pretty well at low end and top end. But if I'm in low gear and running about 30(mid throttle) and then give it more gas, it hesitates a little and there is a loud throaty sound that comes out of my air box. Am I running to lean on the needles?

Oh I almost forgot, I ride dirt bike with him too. He has a WR 450 and I have a CR 250. Same deal with the bikes, I should've bought a Yamaha and should've bought a 4 stroke. Then we get in the trails and my little pinger runs away from him like there's no tomorrow. The only time I can't keep up with that bike is when we are wide open down the gandy dancer or something. My bike tops out around 75mph and his probably goes 85 or 90. But, he can't get away until I hit 70, then he shifts into 6th gear and walks away. HEHE. So I do like the fact that the AC 650 walks away from him after 45 or 50.

I have a arctic cat 400-2001 and I used to have a 1999 wolverine, the wolverines are fast but they have no low end and are geared high.If you get him in mud with your arctic cat you will eat him up, when I had my wolverine in mud it really struggled and as far as hauling a dear and going up hills you will eat the wolverine up to and so will my 400 and thats what arctic cats are made for not racing.

The wolverine even in first is a dog on the low end...I can't image the guys trying to turn 26 inch tires having much fun!I've got 23's on my daughters...that helps it alot, but it has nothing for towing for sure!
