It is impossible to tell from Honda's website whether the Rubicon has low/high range, or simply a one-speed tranny.

It has 3 selectable shift programs in high, but only D2 in low. Not a problem for me. I have yet to shift better than the computer. I just use ESP in the trails for fun or to keep noise and revs low when I want to be quiet.

[img]i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif[/img]I own a 2002 Rubi, and in mine, as well as others opinions, is the best auto made, bar none. It has hi and low range, as well as D1 and D2, which is for performance (speed), or better torque. With ESP, (Electric Shift Program) you can run it auto in both ranges, or go to the electric shift mode, and you have essentially, 10 gears, or shift points. It has tremendous engine braking. I ride the hill country in MN, and I rarely ever have to use the brakes. The new Rincon is a different tranny. It is essentially a 3 speed Automotive type tranny. They can get by with it because of the ample power with the 650cc motor. The Rubicon is Utility first, than/Sport. The Rincon is more Sport, in my opinion. Just my 2-cents.

 

D1 -- No Shifting Horsepower Mode Most normal riding, used 99% of the time by most people. Keeps engine in the upper RPM at peak HP.
D2 -- No Shifting Torque Mode For heavy towing or situations requiring maximum traction with no wheelspin. Keeps engine at mid RPM at the torque peak.
ESP -- Thumb Switch Shifting Electric Shift Program Manual operator control of 5 hydrostatic positions. (5 speed)
