Answered this question about 1000 times now! I pick the EX for slow, tight, semi-technical trails. It has a motor that doesn't mind being lugged down. You can put it in 1 st gear and it will idle you through the rough stuff.

I pick the Z for everything else.

I wouldn't count out the EX at all. On more than 1 dune trip I have had no problem with the z's.
They run good, but they are not a hands down better choice.

I'd get the z too if I could pick either one. But you will not be dissapointed with either. the 400ex is one of the most reliable machines out there and the z400 is also very reliable. Between the two the z400 is better but the 400ex is not that far behind. I have had 0 problems with mine, and my two uncles both have 400ex's one has had a 440 big bore in his and he rides hard almost every weekend at black river falls and my other uncles uses his for riding in the woods and stuff around the house and they have never had ne problems at all. This next spring i am getting a cheap used 400ex cause i can find one that is a ton cheaper than a z and the z is my dads but i ride it alot more than he does

Go for the Z if your getting a new quad. 05 Z400 got the new rezy shocks,better carb, and a host of other new items. 05 400ex got new plastic a small tranny change and a big increase in price..... If your looking at used I think that either machine would make you happy.

z400!!! better everything from shocks, motor, gear box, clutch, and top speed at 70+mph in stock form, 65mph for the 400ex, the z400 is a great quad and will never fail! Go with the z you be very happy!

400ex = Reliablity
Z400 = Ok. All Around Better. But not as reliable as a Honda.
