Mr HP or ODP end cap?
#1
I just got my quad running again thanks to Randall at Recreation Spec. The new/used carb is good. I had him send the HP end cap, too.
I put everything on and it fired right up and runs awesome! Thanks Randall!
However, no spark arrestor. I solved that by doing what I read here about using a strainer screen. Well I used 2 of them together and made a tight mesh. It fits PERFECT! The strainer was $1.60 ea! I think I will have to replace them every now and again because they won't hold up, I'm sure. But they will work.
The noise is much greater than I like. No more sneaking around at night.
I can't tell if it pulls harder or if the noise makes me think so. My tack and rev limiter says it is better!
Anyway, I then see the ODP cap with disks on eBay. Now I am left wondering if I made a poor choice. I can not adjust sound levels with HP. It is merely an open header now.
Anybody have the HP end cap and how do you like it?
Thanks,
B

I know the open endcaps are a huge gain over stock, that is a good idea about the strainer, I know I tried a few things way back when, but now some places it is hard to get away with a strainer for a sparky because they look for the USF approved stamp on it, so you might want to check with your riding area 1st. If sound, cost and sparky are not an issue the open end cap is a good way to go. I am impressed with the ODP endcap from what I have read, I hope to see one in this area soon.

mudnuri,
Can you shoot me a picture of the strainer you used? I looked for one a while back but didn't find anything I thought would work. For $1.60 I could buy a lot of strainers before I paid for a new end cap or pipe.

Blackhawk,
I think one of the questions you have to ask yourself if is, "Am I really Spark Arrested?" when using a strainer screen, or am I merely fooling the rangers. Spark arrestor approval is hard, you have to prove what ever you use is actually arresting the sparks, and can standup to hours and hours of heat from the exhaust. If those strainer screens burn up quickly, then there is not much visible protection from the rangers, let alone the sparks (if it actually arrested sparks to begin with). Also, I doubt anybody has dynoed the "Strainer Screen" to see how well it performs over the open end cap. It may be that performance over stock is pretty low. Just a thought ....
I admire the engineering (not to mention, research) that has gone into the strainer screen concept -

Aaaa sooooooooo gras hoppa you think with glas haf em t. Or may b half full. Depends on the usage I guess. It definitely has my seal of approval!
ODP ir right though. This is by no way anything close to being as good as a real spark arrestor. It is for looks and will burn out after a while.
I don't do dyno, but I know this has way more umf on the low end. After seeing what's inside the factory endcap, I see how choked down it was.
I need to re pack insied my muffler, too.

Oh, I didn't want the screen for any real sort of spark arresting in my case. I'm sure it is better than nothing for that however I really am not doing much riding in areas where fires are a problem. I want to see how much sound dampening the screens make when added to my open end caps. I've got some helmet communicators for my Fiance and I and with the 106db end cap it really isn't easy on the communications aspect. I think if I lost 6 or more db I would be fine. Obviously the tuneable disc system would be ideal for this, (although changing discs is more than the two screws I need to do now) but I've already made an investment. Also, as mentioned before if a guy buys a slip on, and using the 'quiet core' reduces the power gain to close to stock, then I am actually better off to go back to my stock end caps which I still have since nothing is as silent as those things! (You can hear the engine louder than the exhaust!) I'm starting to think I may just run the stock tips when I want to ride with the lady but if I go out on a trip with the boys I'll put on the open tip and not worry about the communications I don't have with the guys. (No one else has the helmet com systems.)
