300EX Help with axle bearings.
#1
I recently bought a 1998 Honda 300ex. I noticed that the rear axle bearings where going out so I ordered two new ones. My question is, if anyone else has had a problem of the new bearings being not wide enough? My old bearings are 3/4 of an inch wide where my new ones are a little wider then half that. I thought of putting 2 on each side but I don't think they will fit. What are my options? Can I fabricate a spacer to make up for the difference?
Thanks for any tips on what I should do, or another store to order the correct parts from.
Thanks Mike.

The bearings should have a number stammped on the edge of the outer race, get the number and any bearing supplier will be a ble to help you out with a like for like product.
Im not sure about the 300, but the 250r and 400 ex were the same cant rememeber the numbers off hand, but if you get stuck pm me i have them written down some where.

You must have an aftermarket carrier. I would recommend taking the old bearing to a bearing house and have them match it to something. It will be better then a Honda bearing, and probably cheaper.

Yes it looks like you have an aftermarket carrier, which is good. Are they taper roller type?
I bought my bearings from a local bearing supplier, but i live in scotland so it wouldnt be much use to you.

Hi that must be why the stock bearings don't fit . I was not told by the guy i got the bike from that he changed it. I do know this much about the old bearings. When taking them out one busted, it had 2 races in it, and had ball bearings. Now that I know its an after market carrier.
I guess my next question is, where to find these after bearings for an after market carrier? Are all after market carriers the same? The problem is I don't have a bearing shop near me I can't walk in and match up my old one.
Thanks guys
Mike

Hello me again, I pulled the carrier out today and sure enough, its a lone-star after market carrier. I was talking to my friend and he told me of 2 places to look so I will be heading there sometime next week. Err I hate working out of town . Thanks guys for pointing me the right way thou, I would still be trying to use them stock OEM bearings he he.

I have a lonestar axle carrier as well. Just make sure u get the right bearings. there double wide bearings. U can get new bearings really cheap off of ebay. U can use stock bearings for temp use but dont leave em in there to long. they wont hold up.
