starting atv racing?

You'll need an AMA or ATVA membership, and probably a local district membership. You'll need a kill switch tether and some types of racing require or highly suggest nerf bars. You can get all further information from you district website.

Just as important as setting up your bike is setting up your budget.
Go down to your local County Clerks office pay to get a Doing Business As (DBA) form and use your entire racing buget as a tax deduction..PM me for GENERAL questions

I don't know if the local racing in Nevada is different than the local racing in Utah, but we do not need either an AMA or ATVA membership. We do need to be a member of the local sactioning body, which in our case is the USRA (Utah Sportsman Rider Association), and it cost $5 for a one day membership, if you only want to race one race, or $20 for a one year membership. We do not need a kill switch tether either. We do need a front and rear number plate, and you are assigned a number when you sign up for your first race, and they will typically give you a pie plate to tape to your number plate. At subsequent races you will be expected to have your racing numbers on. We also are required to use a spark arrestor, and they have tech inspection right at the starting line, where they will pull you off the line if you don't have one. Entry fees range from $30 to $45 around here.
My 14 year old son just raced his very first desert race yesterday, near Wendover, UT, on his YFZ 450. His only mods are an HMF pipe (with spark arrestor), and a rear swingarm skidplate. They started both the A class and B class ATVs at the same time, and I followed my son on my DS650 to make sure he did ok. He had the speed to run with, and pass, some of the A class ATVs in the first few miles, but did not stay at that speed. He finished his first race though, and I only had to chase him down and point him back toward the race course one time.
A stock YFZ should do pretty good at desert racing, there were a slew of them racing yesterday. Good luck with your racing.

your good for now, but I would look into getting a desert tank depending on how long your race course is and how many laps you will do in your class. In new mexico we generaly run 25 mile loops and range from 2 to 4 laps depending on class. here is the web site for our state club. www.nmdrc.com It has alot of pictures and info you might find usefull. Good Luck.
