Default Spark Plug Question (stupid?)

I pulled the plug several months ago after I bought my 01 SP500. The plug is recessed in the head, you can't see in there to inspect it first (at least without a mirror). Anybody have an efficient way to clean out any debris that may be caught - so it doesn't fall right through the plug hole?

Default Spark Plug Question (stupid?)

That is actually a great question. There's nothing stupid about trying to keep dirt out of a motor. Most of us would use an air gun to blow the debris out of the way. Either some water first maybe or carburetor cleaner (my favorite choice). If you have dept stores like Walmart, home depot, etc. you can get a neat pistol grip air gun that has a long semi curved end. They are perfect for reaching in tough places like that. Hope that helps,Bubba

I have used my shop vac before. Just cup your hand around the hose end and the spark plug hole.

Default Spark Plug Question (stupid?)

Good ideas. Thanks. Anybody know why the head is manufactured with a deep recess like that? It seems backwards to logic - it creates a pooling area for water and debris.

LOL scottso. Virtually every WATER COOLED truck, car, boat, jetski, motorcycle and snowmobile I have ever worked on has had a recessed plug. Probably because of the water jacket in the head. I do like what Bubba297 suggests. I blow it out with an air hose prior to pulling the plug.

I don't know about the newer machines - by my '94 Polaris SL750 watercraft doesn't have a recessed head. In fact - you could take the plugs out with an open end or even and adjustable wrench if you needed to.

LOL scottso. Good point, I am sure there are quite a few non-recessed plugs.

The reason that the plug hole is recessed inot the top of the cylender head, is that all the valves, seats porting and cam are all in the head, to allow for all that in there the plug still needs to pertrude into the top pf the cylender and to achieve this they port down through the head deep enough to reach the combustion chamber. There is no water jacket at all in the head. 2 stroke engines like a snowmachine only require a dome head that forms the top of the combustion chamber. There is no valves, cams etc. in there that is why the plug is not recessed into the head, it is not requred to be dropped that far inot the head to get to the cylender. hope this helps fellas.

HEY SCOTTSO, when u get the dirt out and aare putting it back together, put the plug back in, fill the entire recessed hole with DIE-ELECTRIC grease, and shove the plug cap into it. The grease fills the void, seals the cap to the head, and stops dirt from settling into the base. Also stops engine stutter in deep water caused by moisture in the cap.

LOL rmkcac700. You're right about 4 strokes. However, both of my sleds and both jetskis have water running through the heads. My snowmobiles are Skidoo 700 Triples and my jetskis are 650 Seadoos. As far as I remember, all water cooled two strokes have water in the heads because that is where the heat is concentrated at.
