Default Help with a new (used) Trailboss 325...

Hi guys, my g/f just bought a used 2003 Trailboss 325 4-stroke. I already dumped the oil and put fresh
0-40 Mobil 1 in, probably the second oil change in its life. But the machine still seems kinda slow, especially winding it out on the street. Feels like its not reving as high as it should and its kinda restricted. Now I don't know if I'm just used to my 500 scrambler, which is a night and day difference compared to this thing, or what. Seems to make a lot of racket running down the street too....I know, doesn't sound good, but its not smoking or anything, and it starts with no problem. Just looking for ideas.

First thing I would do is check all vent lines, etc. Replace the fuel filter if so equiped. Check the spark plug to see if its lean or rich. Did the machine have any work on it? Pull the air filter and check to see if its dirty.

What kind of noise is it making when going down the street? Clunking, engine noise, tranny noise, tire noise....what? need more info....

It will definitely be much slower than your scrambler....

Default Help with a new (used) Trailboss 325...

I have a trailboss , yes they are not rockets , for one thing I also have slight mods on mine and I use a calibrated speedo and only hit between 47-52 MPH , it can pick up speed on slight slopes but up hills your looking at around 39-40 MPH tops.
I do know that a clean air filter does allot for the quad , I use a K&N filter and it has allot of throttle responce compared to the stock.
I only run polaris oil in mine with a clean oil filter each time as well.
Hope this helps you.

Yeah, I wasn't expecting it to be a rocket, but it just doesn't feel right. As far as fuel filter no, I was always gonna ask where it is? Even on my Scrambler...where is it? The air filter actually looked new.
I haven't checked the spark plug, is it as hard to reach as on my Scrambler?
As far as the noise, her father took it for a spin down the street and it just sounded like a buch of racket, like grinding gears or something....tranny fluid did look a little low and dirty. What is that Polaris tranny fluid anyways, Dextron III? And as far as speed, felt like we only got to about 20-25. Nowhere near 40mph.
Also the foot brake doesn't work. The hand brake will work the rear brake, but using the foot brake won't. The original owner said it never worked, but they never took it back to the dealer...

I bought one for my wife a couple of years back. Indestructable bike but not too fast.

If the noise is like a grinding noise, it could be the chain running through the chain guard. Jack the back wheels off the ground with a floor jack and turn them by hand in neutral. You should hear the noise as the chain moves through the guard. You could also try running it with the wheels off the ground to see of the noise is present. Try to isolate where the noise is coming from.

The aux. foot brakes seem to get air in the system often. Locate which hose goes from the aux. barke pedal to the rear caliper and loosen the bleeder screw to free it up. Then retighten it. Fill the aux. brake resevoir with DOT 3 brake fluid and bleed the aux. brake system. It seems like I have to do this about once a year.

First off in 03 the Trailboss was a 330 not 325. Second either one is slow and does feel like it needs to rev higher. You can change the primary clutch spring to help change the rpm's that it runs at. Overall it is a very reliable quad and will take you anywhere. A K&N filter will also help. The chain does make alot of noise. You need to tighten it to help. I also removed the chain guard to eliminate some noise.

Check the chain mine always was needing to be tightned and keep it oiled. Play with the clutches and you can wake it up a little. A K&N filter and a jet kit helped too. Still not a rocket but had good pulling power and acceleration for its engine size and weight.

Yea sorry it is a 02. The chain is dragging on that guard so I'll tighten that up, plus I have new purple tranny fluid to put in there. We took all the panels off to check everything. So, the fuel pump runs off vaccum created by the airbox? I put a new plug in, but it still fumbles a little sometimes reaching upper rpms, and backfires once or twice getting there. I think we concluded it needs the valves adjusted. Gonna try and tackle that in the next couple of days. Also, how the hell do I change all the oil, when alot of its probably in that large oil cooler up front? I didn't even realize this thing was air-cooled. Thanks alot for the replies.

Drain the oil and refill. Change the oil filter. Takes approximately 2 quarts. I guess the oil cooler drains via gravity.

Just to let you know , the atv is not air cooled ,its oil cooled with a back up fan in case you start to run hot.
I never really see my fan turn on unless I idle for a long period of time or run slow through the trails for a while.
