Giant,
I have no idea why they are so, but those CDI boxes for those trikes are VERY prone to go bad.
They can't be purchased for some of the old KLT models because they have been discontinued and the ones that haven't been discontinued retail for over $300 in most cases. Finding them used is also a hard task because they were always going bad...and if you haven't already figured it out by now...most in the scrap yards these days end up there because the CDI box went bad.
Locally, and regionally, I havent' seen a good used one in many years. My suggestion would be to constantly keep an eye on ebay.
Don't rule out purchasing another KLT250 to get that box. You may run up on one for a bargain and the CDI is in good shape.
Considering that the knowledagble salvage yards know what this CDI is worth, you may come out better in te pocketbook by doing this.

I also have a KLT 200 that had a bad CDI unit. I checked at the Kawasaki dealer and they are still available for $396. I took an old CDI unit from a Suzuki 450 twin and wired in place of the original unit. Took a little thinking to know which wires did what but I just downloaded an electrical wiring diagram for the 450 Suzuki and it all made sense. Just had to not wire up the second cylinder firing from the Suzuki CDI. The KLT runs great and I got by with spending $15 bucks.
