I need an opinion or two. Is the 500 worth the extra $1000 to be able to switch from 2 to 4 wheel drive as opposed to the 400 which is constant 4 wheel drive? This will be my first atv and I will use it for play, hunting, and some light ranch work. I'd appreciate hearing from you 400 owners about your experience. Thanks!

My 400 has been great for me. I only have 200 miles on mine so far, but I have yet to been in a situation where I wish I had the extra 100 or so cc's. It would have been nice to have had the option to switch out of 4WD once or twice, but other than that, Im happy. It is just weather or not you want to spend that extra grand or not. If you can afford it, go for it. But if you can't I know you will still be happy.

Whatever you buy, here are a couple tips...

- I was able to get $300 off the sticker price.

- If you have the slightest feeling you may want a winch, Buy one with the machine. I told them I wanted one for $299 because that was the price in ALL the catalogs. (their price was 399!!) And I wanted free installation. They did not even hesitate!

- Try to get the first service included for free also. A friend told me about that one, After I bought mine. I am sure they would of went for it.

- Ask to look at the AC Accessories Catalog. If there is anything you think you may want out of there, try to order it then(if you can afford it). Because you will demand a 10 - 15% discount on aything you order at the time you purchase the machine.

- Be sure to take advantage of the special offers Arctic Cat sometimes offers. Be sure to find out BEFORE you but it or talk prices if there are any offers!! I chose between a set of Walkie Talkies or the 2YR extended warrentee!! TAKE THE WARRENTEE. You never know when you may need it.

- Buy front CV Joint protectors at the time of purchase. Try for free installation. I ripped a front CV Boot at 50 miles!!

Guess thats it, hope it helped.

I don't think the 500 is worth $1000 more than the 400 personally. $500 yes. Is that really the price difference there? Its no more than $500 around here. Like $5400 for a 400 and $5800-5900 for a 500. The auto goes forabout $200 higher than the manual 500.

Gotta Agree with Andy here. $1000 is a heck of alot for going up only one model.

You sure this is a 400 4x4?

Hello from a new member, (long time lurker). I just got an '01 400 4x4, my dealer sells them for $4750, including a $250 rebate, I also got the $69 Warn winch. I don't remember the price of the 500 auto $5600 or so. So far it has done everything I have asked it to do. Hoping for a snowy winter so I can use my plow.
