shootout:250ex vs. my friends face

Let that be a reminder to all those who think of the 250EX as a "Kid's" quad. Sure he's young, but he's no kid .. and look at him ... doesn't take much to destroy a life .. he got lucky.

A similar accident in San Felipe many years ago almost caused me never getting my first ATC in the first place: Some guy wasn't wearing a helmet, and he punched the gas, making the front end of the three-wheeler he was riding to wheelie (most likely an ATC250R...), hitting him on the head with the handlebars. According to my older brother who saw it all happen, the dude died instantly. I was way too small back then, but it took a good deal of perseverance later to convince my parents to buy me my first bike - a 1984 Honda ATC125M.

I was riding at Ocotillo Wells this weekend (popular desert riding area in So. Calif.). I frequently have to remind my kids to buckle their helmets, so this is something I payed particular attention to this weekend.
It is Calif. law that you have to wear a helmet, but nobody says you have to buckle the thing. I have to say that I was shocked by the number of riders I observed that DID NOT HAVE THEIR HELMETS BUCKLED! I would estimate 25%! That's just stupid! The protection provided is greatly reduced by not buckling up. If you are going to go to the trouble of putting on a helmet, it just takes a second more to buckle it.
