Recon & Big Red Compatibility Question

Recently I picked up a Recon as an extra quad to use to do a little work with, light muddin' and for friends to ride that dont have a quad when we go ride. I was noticing that the drive train off the 250 big red is similiar to the recon. I would like to put some 25" tires on it for extra ground clearance with a lift kit. a friend of mine has done this to his sons recon but it tends to bog the motor in the thicker stuff. my question is does the big red have a lower gear ratio in the rear end and would it bolt up? The big red came from the factory with bigger tires than the recon. I know the Big Red has a low range gear in the tranny so my next question is would this engine bottom end work? or are they the same rear end ratio but the atc uses the low range for a lil more grunt with the bigger tires? Just a crazy thought I had does anyone know the answers?

all utilities generally have a lower ratio out back for towing and what not, their not for speed, but if i get what your asking, it is a possibility that it will bog down, because if you have big wheels, the engine needs to turn over all that extra weight, but what would make sense? the lower the ratio the less likely you are to bog it or kill it, so the higher you go makes it hard to the motor to turn over on a smaller gear. i do not know if i made matters worse for you, but i'm just confusing my self alittle, but i think i completely missed the 12 foot wide nail, and thats hard, but anyways, hoped it helped.

The Recon's rear end will not swap with the BigRed and neither will any of the engine components. Totally different...regarding ANYTHING swapping out.
If you want more clearance and traction on a Recon with very little effect on the power and gearing you need to do some improvising.
You will need a set of OEM Rancher 11" rear wheels. These will bolt directly onto your stock Recon wheel hubs.
Go with a set of 24x10-11 ITP MudLites.
This is the best mud setup I have seen used on a Recon and we have performed this swap more than a few times once we saw how well it worked out.
It's the tallest you can go without running into major fender clearance issues and the Recon will pull a 24 MudLite with no problem at all.
If you want more clearance and traction on a Recon with very little effect on the power and gearing you need to do some improvising.

thanks knowsalot...u answered what I was wondering..on my friends sons recon he did have to trim the heelguards a bit to get the 25" tires on..I think the 24" may be the better option now that I have thought about it also..less moving mass to turn and only about 1/2" difference in clearance between 25" and 24". what is the reason for the rancher rims? they are a lil bigger and weigh less than rubber I would assume?

The reason for the 11" Rancher wheels is because there isn't a MudLite for a 9" taller than 22"
Aftermarket replacement wheels are either 9"...or 12"........not 11"
And the only MudLite that will work under your fenders are 24"......which are available for a 11" wheel...but not the Recon 9"
