need help with 05 kodiak 450!!
#1
anyone!! I have a 05 kodiak 450, have had the bike for about 7 months. Modifications include EPI clutch kit, k&N Filter, and 25 inch mud lite XLs. Engine has about 25 hours on it, oil has been changed twice, once after 10hr break in, once after clutch kit install. Now to the problem. After riding for about 5 hours on Sat., the engine sputtered like it was out of gas, then quit. I tried reserve, adding more gas, checking the spark plug, air filter, etc. The engine will start and idle just fine. When you apply any throttle, it sputters and quits. Choke cable is working as it should. Any ideas??

I've had problem like that with my 02' Big Bear 400 4x4. It turned out that my float in the carb was getting stuck and only allowing a little bit of gas into the carb. Try taking the float bowl off and spraying the entire assembly with some gumout or something comperable. It took care of my problem. I hope this helps you too.

Hey i have had that same exact problem with my bear tracker.. If it is the same thing no worrys it is easy to fix... Look at the carb wherre the exit of the carb to the head goes ther eis a rubber tube. There there is a clamp and the clamp came loose and all you ahve to do is loosen it some more and then push the carb back on the rubber hose while someone else tightens the clamp. It can be a reall bi%$# but that is what fixed mine.. I would try that if that doesnt work then reply or even if it does let me know...

Thanks for all the replies. I'll go and check this stuff out the next couple of days. I have a DynoJet jet kit on order, and HMF will be sending me their utility pipe, (when they get it fabricated for the 05), so I'll need to look at the carb anyway. I'll return and post what I find out. Thanks again

Thanks for the info. Every dealer I go to around here tells me its not available and the air boxes are different from 04 to 05. Anyways I will have to go order an 04. By the way, did you install the clutch kit yourself??

Yes, noticed a difference right away. Power gets to the ground much quicker. Install isn't that difficult. Make sure you have an impact wrench to get the primary and secondary clutchs off.

On your original problem...check to see if the main jet is plugged. The float bowl was probably stirred up a bit from all the riding, and a piece of crud, probably got sucked into the main jet and is now stuck. The main jet also supplies fuel to the midrange, so if its plugged...anything over idle is starved.

Hondabuster, you were right!! Took Carb off my 450 and had some mud in the bowl which had been sucked into the main jet. New problem, I completely cleaned the carb out as best I could, replaced it, however my kodiak will not start. If I feather the choke, I can get it to fire once or twice and that's it. I took the plug out, and it was covered with gas and black. When I grounded the plug and fired the engine the spark was extremely weak, (it didn't even look like it was hitting the electrode), is my plug fouled?
On another note, If you look on the left side of the engine, there is a tube that connects to the top right of the carb. The tube runs under the gas tank. It's not the fuel supply tube and I can't trace where it goes. This tube was full of mud, any ideas how I got mud in this tube?
