Polaris Sportsman 400 belt issues
#1
So out on the trails this weekend and the fourwheeler decided it does not want to climb hills, i got it back somehow and took the belt cover and and the belt looks brand new but i powerbreaked it and the belt just started slipping, i got a new one on the way but i was wondering the actual width of a new belt? Supposedly in the service manual it tells you. Also is this what happens when a belt slipps, it does does not want to move up hills, just the RPM's go up? It would move on flat ground but not nearly like it should and the RPM's are high there too?

You got me on that one. I have the '05 w/EBS and just went for a ride with my new Heel Clicker installed and didn't have any problem. Even before the HC I didn't have any problems climbing hills. I typically use low range when on the trails. I suspect that if your belt is slipping you should be smelling burnt rubber at some point. Sorry I couldn't be of too much help.

ATVextreme OH..........ya need to get a shop/repair manual , it would give you an idea for troubleshooting your quad.
First I would get to the dealer cause I dont feel the belt is the problem, or at least NOT WHAT CAUSED THE PROBLEM!!
400 miles on machine, I hope it is a belt but seems more like clutch or secondary like NH Mudbear suggested that may be the culprit.
How did the machine act the last time you rode it? Did it seem slower or less responsive? I know the secondary or driven clutch has a spacer/shim adjustment on the inside of the assembly. I had that happen to my Scrambler 400 and it really didnt have a problem the ride before it happened. The machine was almost new then and I think that I just didnt realize that it was losing performance cause I was new to the machine. Put in some other size shims from the dealer, ( I think they cost like a buck each and come in different thicknesses). Dealer was to far for me to haul machine in so I started asking questions on the internet and found this ATV Connection Forums site, ( ANYBODY FAMILIAR WITH IT ? ) LMAO and BAM these folks threw so many responses at me I had to get the manual and start reading from there.
Most problems require mechanical knowledge/ability but usually can be done on your own with help from the FORUM members and the Machines Bible.
I have yet to replace a belt on my 2000 Scrambler ( SORRY belt haters...ITS TRUE !!) and its the original belt that came with it even after the secondary shim problem. I think the shim correction is what made the difference and the PERFORMANCE increase was incredible because the belt rides the sheaves the proper way.
Real world knowledge... DONT GO TO THE DEALER WITHOUT IT !!
PS...My 2000 was bought new in FEB. 2002 so the belt has only 3 years on it.

GEEZE ATVextreme, I just noticed your TOY CHEST !
Reads more like a dealer showroom than a garage,
Ya gotta know Ramps and Buttons. They are on the primary clutch and look exactly like the names they are.
Ramps are sloped and buttons ride up them.
I wish you had something else to ride till you get her fixed....LMFAO ...SORRY FOR YOUR LUCK...LOLLOLLOL

I counted 10 Belt Drive Quads in your signature.. 10!!!! And you do not know the symptoms of Belt wear and slippage, and what Ramps and Buttons are???
At any Rate, I would suggest a repair manual also, These clutches can be tuned for incredible performance, but also can break your wallet if you dont know what your doing.
