Hi I have just found your forum and decided to join .I have a 1986 atc250r which I,ve owned since 1986 its looking a bit sorry for itself as I havent used it for the last 10yrs as its been in storage at my uncles farm , Its my third trike , I had a atc70 when I was 8yrs then moved up to 1983 atc200x then to my 86 atc250r I am now in a position to restore my trike any ideas on where to start? I have a decent workshop manual Cheers

 

i would start on where things can rot. the carb, radiator hoses, fork seals, brake fluid crap like that. replace the front tire too if it has cracks.

 

If it sat for 10 years, I woulld start with all the basics first,
change the trans oil
new plug
clean air filter
drain all the fuel
if the carb had fuel left in it, take it apart and clean it.
flush the coolant
suirt a touch of ATF into the cylinder and rotate the engine around, then do a compression test, to see what you have there.
Other than that I would just do the bike shakedown to check the bearings, and lube the chain ect.

 

Welcome to the forum! It looks like some of the folks have a good laundry list of places to start. I would add that the recoil rope is probably shot, so you may as well take a look at it. Otherwise, you'll get everything dialed in, go to start it (all excited) , and be really pissed off when the handle is no longer attached to the recoil. I know this from experience.

 

Scratch that. I forgot you have no recoil. On the other hand, if you need any other innacurate or incomplete advice, I'm always willing to help...

 

Hee Hee Hee yep I,ve definately havent got a recoil lol!! well i,ve pretty much stripped the 250r down to its bare bones, i need a new cylinder head which is being delivered tomorrow and a full gasket set I,m back in work tomorrow and all weekend so i,m going to take my box of bits and start degreasing cleaning etc my biggest worry is stripping the forks down has anyone done that ? any tips? Thanks guys
