Just bought a Explorer 400
#1
Hello all. Do to some family circumstances I ended up buying a Explorer 400. It is in great shape and has been well taken care of. I did alot of the upkeep on it myself over the years. I think its an 93 or 94, whatever the first year was that had the newer desighn with the light on the handle bars. I cant remember off the top of my head how many miles are on it but i know it is over 3000 easy.
If I wanted to freshen the quad up. lets say go through the motoer and stuff. Who would be a good company to contact concerning parts? Big bore kits? How can I tell if the clutches/springs are getting worn in the PVT? Do they ever need replaced? Exausts?
I dont want to make into a loud all out machine but if I am going to be getting in it, I think it never hurts to get a little more out of it.
My only complaint is the steering is really stiff. It seams like it wasnt that way before. Any ideas on where to start looking?

Unless you just want to drop a ton of cash into it I would just do a basic topend job boring it to the next size and useing a Wiseco piston and Polaris gaskets. Then for a little more power I would go with an Aaen Torquer pipe and silencer and get their clutch kit to match the pipe. You wont have a super fast bike but it will suurpise the 700s.If you want more power than that have the jug ported and go with either a Vforce reeds or a Boysen Rad valve reeds. But for a 4x4 trail machine the first stuff will work great. I had my 96 400 Sportsman set up like that and it was great.

you can get the piston and gaskets from ebay after you know what size of piston you need along with a piston pin bearing. Aaens web site is www.aaenperformance.com
