All wheel drive not working
#1
I have a Polaris Explorer 400 4x4 that will not engage the front tires any more. I think the AWD switch is working because when I have it in reverse and hit the over ride button the AWD light comes on but it while in low forward it will not engage the front tires the back tires will just sit there and spin and the light never comes on. I bought it used 3 years ago and have never had any problems so I am hoping this is minor !!!
ANY help would be greatly appreciated....
Thanks Dan

Does awd work in reverse? If so, then it is probably the sensor in your H/L/R/N shifter. There is a sensor in there so there is no awd in neutral, and if it doesnt know you are in high or lo, it wont turn on awd. That is why the light isnt coming on.
If awd isnt working in reverse, even with the light on, there are two issues, the above electrical one and another mechanical one.

I have not found a good way to check it in reverse yet... I will tie it to something today and let in spin and see if the rear tires engage. I have not found any cracks or loose wires so far!!!
THANKS for the help

Well put it in reverse, put in AWD, hold the override, and hit the gas hard. If 2wd, the tires will spin easily. If in AWD, you will be thrown over the bars.
If you do it sensibly, that is an easy way to check. I'm just not responsible if you really do go over the bars .

Tied it to a tree in some tall grass back tire broke traction, hit the override AWD light came on and front tires dug in...So as you guessed it only works in reverse. Where is this magic sensor and how hard is it to replace.
Thanks for the help and your legal disclaimer!!
Thanks again

NEVER DO THAT AGAIN That $50 switch turns into a $500 repair
Your not supposed to hit the AWD switch if the back wheel's are turning faster then the front,
such as
spinning out on dirt by giving it full throttle and hitting the switch,
Slideing all over the ice and hitting the switch,
And tieing it to a tree in some tall grass, gasing it untill the tires brake traction and hitting the switch
Youll break the gears in the transfer case
You can hit the switch while running full throtle,(as long as your not spinning the back faster then the front)
Ya know what I mean.
