Raptor valve tick
#1
Did a valve adjust for the first time. When turned the crank, I could not get any slack at TDC between the rocker and tappet. I rotated the crank to the I mark when the valves springs were up. This was TDC on the compression stroke.
If I understood correctly the shop manual says to adjust so there is a tiny bit of slack at compression TDC 0.10" to 0.15" intake and 0.15" to 0.20" exhaust.
Now there is a slight tick when the engine is running. Is this normal?

I had this same thought too?My 04 350 did'nt tick till after I adjusted mine too. Some of the guys on here said it takes a couple of times to get it right.Mine is not real loud, but I can tell the differance in the way it sounds.I don't think it would be anything major as long as you are not way out of adjustment. My bike has run fine with the tick,no problems.Just a little out of adj. I hope.Anyone else have any opionions on the subject, curious to know.

yea ive rode my 350 when it ticks a very small amount i havent adjusted my valves for a year so they need to be done soon... ive hear the motors tick a little anyway but im not really shure about the 660

Well since the manual says there is supposed to be slack between the rocker/tappet at TDC one would think some additional valvetrain noise would occur. Is there no one that can confirm this?

Some valve train ticking is normal. It is the parts of the valve train slapping together taking up the slack that makes the noise.
As for the problems with no slack when you try to adjust your valves, on a 4-stroke engine, there are two top-dead-center's. One when the piston is at the top of the compression stroke (The one you want, both valves fully closed, rockers should have slack) and another at OVERLAP, this is when the piston has come to the top of the cylinder and pushed the exhaust out, and is ready to go down again and suck air in through the intake valve. Both valves are open for a brief 'overlap' time, it helps to purge the exhaust out more as the outgoing exhaust sucks fresh air in through the intake valve. in this case, both valves are open when the piston is at the top, so there will be no slack in the rockers.
If you adjust your valves to have the proper amount of lash on the compression TDC, you'll be fine, the noise you hear is normal.
If you adjusted your valves on the overlap TDC, you have excessive clearance and you'll be losing power.

holy crap, that much clearance?? My rancher is only .006" for both valves. Are you sure you read the numbers right? the manual will say measurements in millimeters too. With that much clearance, no wonder you have a ticking sound.
