Hole in oil screen a problem?
#1
As a few of you know I had a stripped out oil plug hole a few days ago. After talking with my local shop owner (a yammy shop, know them pretty well and trust them more than the two bomb shops) he used a spark plug repair kit on the hole, so now it uses a 14 mm bolt. I am happy with it (mostly because...I have a working drain plug and can go on my trip) but, I pulled the bolt out to flush more oil through (make sure no extra shaving inside) and looked up inside to see that the bolt was a hair too long and pushed out that screen and made two small holes in it. I told everyone at the shop about the screen, and even the owner of the shop (the one who did the work) had mentioned it, so I know he knew it was there.
Anyway, that obviously isnt somthing I can replace easily (Dont plant to split the cases for a long time) but is this a problem? I have a scotts stainless oil filter, and clean my screen in the oil resevoir every change.
The total for the labor/parts came to 65... I am hoping the holes are not a big deal, but am still thinking I should try to get the work for free or somthing, seeing as how it was their mistake.

There are two oil pumps - supply and return. the supply pump pulls from the tank which has a screen in the bottom. the return pump send oil from the crankcase back to the tank, which goes thru the screen you speak of that now has a hole. if debris that would otherwise get caught by the crankcase screen gets thru the holes, assuming its small enough to get thru the return pump it will then be caught by the screen in the tank. But in the event of some kind of failure in the motor that sends excessive debris into the crankcase, it would be possible for return oil pump damage due to screen having the holes.
Common debris the crankcase screen would catch is fiber clutch disk links. The little fiber links of the clutch sometimes delaminate and end up in the drain plug pocket. These little fibers I would think would be chewed up in the oil pump without damaging it. But maybe a builder or somebody more experienced has some better info here.
Given their incompetence with a task so simple as re-tapping the drain plug hole, this is not the place I would want breaking my cases. You could end up with more issues than a simple screen hole in the longrun. Personally I would let the screen go, and not tear the motor down just for it. But I also would not pay them a single dime for the work they did on the drain plug, and frankly I am shocked they actually charged you $65. I would express my extreme diappointment and take my bike home without ever pulling out my wallet, and if they had a problem with that I'd tell them to **** off!

I think I am going to go back and demand a refund of the 65 bucks, and if they decline, I will tell them they can then give me the money it costs to have another dealership split the cases and replace the screen. I usually trust them (I do not care for the owner, a bit of a dick) but I think this is somthing I have to do, even if it means I will be screwed for all future service with them (hopefully they wont have to touch it again, I was hoping the service manager was going to do it, because I know him well, but he was replacing the plastic on a gixxer at the time )
