ya I hear stories of people making big $$$.
My 1st job was with Stevens transport out of Mesquite TX. I had to pay tolls, lumpers etc and never got reimbursed like they claim. I would spend 3-4 days per week sitting and waiting on a load. Once I sat 3 days on the Jersey Turnpike at a rest area w/o a shower. Oh there was a Burgerking but eating Burgerking 3 days straight for breakfast, lunch and dinner brings the suck.
Stevens uses the qualcome to determine if the truck needs to be running so I was in 90* heat in a dark blue truck w/o A/C the whole time.
My 2nd job was with a local Company. I had heard bad stories about these guys but I desperatly needed a job. They kept me out 3 days straight in a daycab! I only got to nap a little over the steering wheel. This truck I was driving was a rolling felony and I got red tagged at the Cajon scales. I was able to hitch a ride back with another driver and I never went back.
Between working for these 2 companies my Jeep got repoed.
I then got a job with another local company and pay was pretty good...At first. But we got paid by percentage and every year they would cut the rates to get loads and stopped paying us if we were empty, it got to where I was working 80+ hours a week and maybe bringing home $300.
I quit 2 years ago to flip burgers which paid $9.00 hour to start! After 90 days I got moved up to $10.hour which was more per week than I ever got driving.
I eventully quit that and got a job at a radiator shop mainly fixing automotive A/C.
Last year I applied at another local company because I needed a 2nd job. These fools offered me $.16cpm to drive in L.A. traffic! 1/2 cent raise every year. I pretty much told them where to stick their Freightliner.
I still have my CDL and currant medical card because ocasionally we work on a semi and I get to go on a "test drive" to make sure the A/C is workingwhich gets me out of the shop for a little while.
