Starter wont crank
#1
I let my bike sit for about 4 months trhu the winter time, and my starter wont crank now. Before i let it sit it will start at the first try. My goal will be to see if I can get some advice on how to take it a part and see if I can fix it my self with out having to replace it. Does anybody know if this is possible. I fiquere that with the change of temperature during winter the brushes might of gotten stuck..
Please help.

I just had that problem with my 02 sportsman 700. I wasnt able to ride it for about 2 months and when i went to ride it it wouldnt start. It just made a clicking noise. The starter was froze up. I had called a couple local shops and was told that they didnt make a rebuild kit for the 700. So i had to buy a new starter. On mine there are just 2 bolts on top that hold the starter on the motor. Once i got it off, there are just 2 more long bolts that hold the case of the starter together.

Make sure you pay attention when you take it apart so that you put it back together right. You can video how it came apart to help on reassembly if you like.

Yes, it’s a free fix if you want to spend the time fixing it.
Polaris starters commonly fail after a couple years.
The problem is moisture getting inside the starter and rusting the brushes solid in there pockets, preventing them from making contact with the armature.
Free up the brushes and clean everything up with brake cleaner. You’ll probably need to do this every 2 years or so.
My 2000 500 Sportsman has the original starter, and I’ve had to do this repair twice.
Good luck with it.

you can either put power right to the starter motor with jumper cables or use a wire between the contacts on the solenoid to bypass it, like on an older car.
If you have and auto Chilton or Haynes manual it will explain a few techniques.
