HELP!! New to belt Drive (05' Grizzly 660)
#1
I need some help. I bought a 05' Grizzly 660 and managed to fill the "V-Belt" case with muddy water. I just picked the machine up friday, after trading in my 02' Big Bear. Earlier tonight I decided to "Christen" it. Long story short I found a nice big ditch filled with water and I got stuck in it. When I finally got out Ihad no power no doubt due the belt slipping. After limping home at 7 mph. I took out my case drain plug and found it was FULL and I do mean full of muddy water. I've always ridden Big bears, and their 5 speed shift ya know. So I'm new to this whole belt thing. So, did I destroy my belt? After all the mud being in there do I need to rinse out the v-belt case, and if so how, do I need to dissassemble it all? I'm kinda dissapointed in the Griz, my BB would go throught that and worse, I never had any problems like this before...

Crappy deal. You belt shouldnt be fried but you should take off the belt case and clean it out good. Seeing that you were in that much water i thing you should also look at re greasing the clutch rollers.

You can go pretty deep with a grizzly, but you have to be carefull not to slam into the water because the waves can wash into intakes for the tranny. There is one under the front cover and one under the rear cover. I have taken my griz up to the bottom of the seat with no problems because I go in smooth. The belt will probably be fine, but if your top end seems slow, the clutch weights could have junk in them that will stop them from closing the driven sheave and therby limiting the speed. The tranny system on the griz cannot be sealed because it has to dissapate heat. There is a price for the convienience of not haveing to shift. It works great. If you want to keep going deep, snorkle the intake and the tranny exhausts. I have never swamped mine because I can't afford to fix it for no reason so I am careful.

Mine topped out at 66 mph. Some go as high as 68 or 69. Once I modded the clutch, it tops out at 63 mph, but it gets there really fast. My top end isn't important to me at all. Just the acceleration on the trails. I am going to have to time my 0 to 60 times because they will probably be pretty impressive.

mine topped out at 68 mph on the speedo but some people proved Yamahas speedo to be off by a few MPHs.....right now with 26" 589s my speedo will read 60 topped out in flat dirt road....but it's really squirly

OK, I feel a little better now, I didn't lose any top end. I took it out and got up to 67 on the road, I still had a little throttle left too

The speedometer gets more accurate with bigger tires. I think that I am about perfect with the 26" tires, so I am going a true 63 mph. The 67 you are going is probably around 65 to 66. Not a big deal though. That is pretty fast on a quad.

So I just bought a 2005 660 today and it has been snorkeled out. So I proceeded to test it out and when I hit the water which got above the foot rests a few inches I found out the snorkel wasn't sealed. The snorkel that blows the air out from the belt box was blowing steam out like crazy from that point on and I could push the throttle all the way in and the motor raging but the tires were barely moving... can someone help explain what's wrong.
