I myself do not own one, but have spent a lot of time on one. Of all the Honda utility machines, this is probably the only one that has the amount of power that it should from the size of the engine. Most Honda utilities feel a bit underpowered compared to other manufacturers' bikes of the same displacement. Not so with the Recon. That little 250 four-stroke has some pep to it in the right hands. Very light and nimble. After spending loads of time on my Rubicon, it's fun to hop on the little Recon and throw it around on the trail. Honda reliability through and through. You cannot go wrong with the Recon for a solid, reliable, low-cost utility.

A real peach! Handles great and descent power. Dead solid reliable. The suspension is utilitarian so it's not a sport bike, but still great.

One suggestion: If you don't need the racks, get a 250EX. It's a Recon in sport bike plastic. The biggest plus is that it is 50 POUNDS LIGHTER and a little wider, so it's a bit more stable. It will do everything the Recon will.

Thanks for the replys, had 2002 trx250 ex which i used to ride in the florida everglades b-4 we moved.great bike but hauling back pack was a real pain in the a--. looking at the recon seems about the same as the sporttrak but w/o the racks, also seems a little wider.only draw back was it seemed the sporttrak needed one more gear so as not to top out too quickly.trying to figure out if new recon was as nimble with enough oomph to get me up the larger hills around where i live.Only road on flat grounds before.I'm 5'10" and 180 lbs

As long as the hills aren't particularly slick or rocky, don't think twice about it. Stick it in 1st or 2nd and let it eat. Agility is not a problem what so ever.

I have one and I live in the mountains. If you can keep the front end down and keep up your momentum on the slick stuff you can climb any hill anyonelse can. I have a hard time making turns while haveing 2nd gear pegged up a hill. The front end comes up and you can't steer. My hills are as steep as they can get.

If you weant to wake the recon up get e 250ex pipe gut it and jet the carb. Get a uni filter and cut holes in the lid. THat will boost the power at least 25%.

I have a 2004 model (not much difference in the mechanicals compared to a 2005) and it has been real fun and tough so far. I don't have a lot of time on it, but it stacks up nicely compared to some bigger and more equipped units that I have ridden with. Power is great. Handling is good. Not very comfortable if you are tall. One of my buddies gets a kick out of riding it instead of his Rancher 4x4, and I can't wait to get off his to get back on my Recon.

As stated before, the power is pretty awesome for a bone stock 229 pushrod engine. Mid-range tourque is stronger than it really should be when you look at it on paper. It climbs and pulls like a champ.

I just picked up a yellow '05 ReconES. I got a good price on it at $3250 and it is well worth it. I'm amazed at how much fun a person can have with such a small, low cost machine. I think it's just as fun as the bigger machines. It has good midrange power, handles excellent, sharp cornering, '05 suspension upgrades make it ride good, just an excellent machine. Honda is the only machine with electric shift so it was my only option. rooster

I have not had much trouble out of my o4 recon es. When I first got it it stalled on hills and nearly killed me twice. I rejetted the carb and put a gutted 250ex pipe on it and it has never stalled again. The es quit working one time. I checked everything out and the battery cable was loose. I tightened it up and it worked fine.

I thought es would work if the batterry was dead? I think it can be dead but it still must make a circuit. Can't be disconnected.

You should do the mods to it. My friend left his stock to compare and mine just leaves him off the line. Top end is higher too.

I broke mine in hard and he babied his so even when mine was stock it was faster.
