2000 Sportsman....where is the power?
#1
I am the proud owner of a 2000 remington sportsman. I have noticed that it doesn't have near the power that my 1999 sportsman had. I can't figure it out. I hvae jetted it down from stock 155 main jet to 147.5 main jet for higher altitudes that I normally ride. I ride here at 3000' and then in the mountains at 5-7500' I have also found that I am not the only one with this complaint...several of my friends are having the same problem. I heard somewhere that I should be jetting up to a 160 main jet but this makes no sense to me. SOme people say they are straving for fuel at these elevations....any comments or help wopuld be greatly appreciated.

IT'S THE CLUTCH!! You need lighter weights in your primary clutch for higher elevations. I live at 4300ft in New Mexico and ride up to 7000ft. Less air means less power, jetting is only part of the answer. Less power means the clutch engages much too early, putting your engagement below optimum power curve. Your dealer should install high altitude (lighter) weights for free, assumming you bought it from him. Buy the $24 White clutch spring and enjoy the power you were expecting, or learn to change weights and/or springs in less than 30 minutes yourself and not bother with dealers.
