I would save for a little while longer and get a 450r. 250rs are great, but are getting old. The older they get, the more prone to breaking they are. 450rs are in there prime. Just my $.02 cents

I have two 250R's both were in decent shape when i purchased them, but it seemed like there was always something that needed fixing. Any quad you buy that is that old something is going to start messing up on it due to the age of the quad. None of mine were major problems just little things. You can find parts for these things very easily and usually at a decent price. The money I have put in both of them I could have probably bought a brand new one. As far as the quad goes it is great expecially for MX. If i were you i would prolly save up a little more and get the 450R. I don't think you would go wrong with either but on the 250 you will be repairing somethings i can almost guarantee you that. thats just my 2cents.

I have had two 88 r's and one 86 r, loved all three. Great bikes and are as dependable as you make them, just like any bike. No maintenace no dependable riding. You could very easy sink as much, even more, on a old 250r as you would buying a brand new 450, it's whatever you perfer. Myself, I'd put around $4K in a 250r and be happy, but I am one who would rather have a 2stroke than a 4stroke. I'm riding a quadracer right now, always have my eyes open for a nice r though.

On my 86 i had a few gears that were worn pretty good, so i had those replaced at a local honda dealer. I probably could have done this myself but i wanted it to be done exactly right so i let them do it ended up costing $396 for parts and labor. I think they replaced a few bearings and seals also. My stator went out once so i upgraded it to a CR250 stator supposedly it gets a hotter spark. Other than just a few minor things that i have done myself. When you go to buy one checkaround the front sprocket for damage especially where the case saver is supposed to go. Both of mine have had some damage in that area nothing major. Also check around the shifter i just about bout an R that the chain had evidently came off and got wedged under the shifter and broken a piece off and and been welded back on. Check the swingarm and be sure to check the frame over really good for cracks especially under the seat and around the motor mounts. Other than that i have replaced buhings and bearings here and there and of course the motor mods. just to give the R a little more umph.

Go for the 250R----one of the best 2-strokes ever put in a quad and definitley the best 2-stroke quad chassis ever! Even after all these years, I would rather have a 250R over the newer 4-strokers. With the right mods the R will smoke 'em too, even if the 4-strokers are modded as well. Plus of course, the R is very light.

i currently own an '86 250r. i bought the bike for $4000 i spent way to much money on it. but i had to have it. HAHA the first weekend i had it i blew it up because I didnt jet it for where i was riding. bummer. oh well. i replaced the piston and rings and had it bored and the only other problems i had were that the swingarm bolt rusted it self in side the swing arm. wow that was a chore to replace. and the front shocks were so old that they were just stiffer than ever. but ride it. see if you like it.... i wanted more power so im putting in a CR500 as we speek.
