Default opinions on 94 sport 400

Hey guys-
I'm back in the market for an ATV and found a 94 Sport 400 for sale. It has been adult driven and still has 80% tread on the original tires! The guy is asking $1200 OBO, so I figure I'll offer him $1000 and work from there. Is there anything bad I should look out for on this machine? What's your opinion on the 94 Sport 400?

the sport is a great quad. Its what i started on. Not that theres somthing bad to look for on them, but just look for the usual. Look for bad rust that could lead to a hole in the frame, you no anything, tears in the seat, bad cracked plastic could be a sighn of abuse. If you test ride it, make sure it doent pull to a seartin direction. When you ride, take your hands off the bars and see where is goes, hopefully it goes strait and true. If it goes left or right it could mean a bent frame, or its just out of alighnment.

i baught a 98 sport $1400 and rode it for a few months and the motor blew. broke piston, broke rod, bent crank shaft, scored the cylender, put hole in the case ruined all berrings and more. cost $1500 to fix, then the dealer said that the motor hasn't been rebult in a while. i would ask how many hours are on the engine before. the price sounds right. after i sold the sport i baught a raptor 660 and a 4x4 400 scrambler and like them a lot

The 94 400 doesnt run quite as good as the 96-up but is still a great machine. But do figure on a new piston and bore job before you ride it much. The stock pistons are known to break the skirt off trashing a motor.Best bet is to rebuild the topend ASAP useing a Wiesco piston.

i would agree on planning on a rebuild... i bought a 98 400 a couple of months ago... the guy said he just rebuilt it... i got some good riding out of it but it slowly lost power... when it finally died i did a rebuild and found out that the guy did rebuild it... but be never bored it out... i had to bore it .75mm over.... not to bad on a do it yourself job.... she runs like a beauty now... i would make sure you check all the lines and the air box... mine had a leak in the oil injection line and those airboxes can catch a lot of junk... make sure it seals well or there might be debris gettin into your carb.

good luck

Hey guys-
Thanks for all the replies. I ended up buying the machine around August 20th for a few reasons. 1: the price was right($1200). 2: the machine has the original tires on it with nearly 90% tread remaining. 3: The machine had a new Wiseco piston installed two weeks before I bought it...it hadn't even been broken in yet. Just a correction...it is a 95 model, not a 94 model. It hasn't given me any trouble yet, and I'm very happy with it!

sounds like you got a good deal I hope the piston wasn't replaced as a result of the skirt breaking or the bottom end bearings won;t last that long.

I am not positive on this but I remember reading that the earlier sports have a more limited selection of aftermarket pipes for them and the cylinder does not have boost ports just FYI.

The piston was replaced for preventative maintenance. I saw the original piston and it was not broken. I have looked into pipes already and am disappointed HPD does not make their trail pipe for the 94-95 Sport 400. Rick told me he does make a pipe for my machine, and so does AAEN and HSP. What exactly are "boost ports"?
