Help - Clicking when pushing starter button.
#1
I just put my starting motor back on. When I had everything hooked back up I hit the starter button and the bike turned over several times.
I let go of the button and pressed it again and heard a "click click" noise coming from the little box next to the battery. I believe that it is the relay or solenoid. Does the clicking mean its toast? Would the rebuilt starter have something to do with it? Would the battery be low? I tightened up the battery posts and the same thingh happened.
Can anyone help? I dont mind attempting mechanical stuff, but electrical stuff . . . I have very little knowledge ot nerve.

no guy, you want to hear that clickin from that little box. that means the relay is workin!! but it also should mean the starter should fire too. somthin is a miss in the starter. i know you didnt want to hear that
. check the lead to the starter first, then you will have to go into it again if its not that!!!

Actually, when I was mounting the starter I noticed that the Shop put the starter back together upside down. I had to remove the two bolts and rotate the "starter end cap" 180 to make the bracket line up.
When I had it all bolted up and was hooking up the +ve to the starter I noticed that the bolt was loose, but it tightened up after I hooked up the wire.
Hmmm . . . you might have something there.

Loyal,
My guess is that you have one of two possible problems.
1) Battery Low
2 Starter Cylinoid (sp) is bad.
To test the battery, just jump it with another 12volt battery.
To test the cylinoid, take two screw drivers and connect the two larger cables together. This will provide a direct current to the starter. (Just like jumping the cylinoid on a Ford Truck). If you jump it and the starter kicks over, you have found your problem I believe most ATV cylinoinds run about $50. I have been told that you can go buy a ford cylinoid for around $7 and it will work the same????

I had the same problem on an LT80 I had way back and the problem was'nt the cylinoid it was a bad starter.
I also had a YFM 80 and tried to clean the starter when I put it back on it would'nt work. all is it did was click I think there was a possiblity of a short accuring when I was playing with the wiring wi'll connecting it (I forgot to disconnect the battery).
My advise is unless you know how to repair starter motors don't lay a fingure on them.
Your probably an expert at rebuilding them for all I know.

LOYAL,
I had a 1996 Sportsman 400L 4x4 and let me tell ya it is most likely the starter. I went out to start mine one morning and it cranked up but slower than usual. When I shut it off and went back to start it.........click click. Solenoid is fine it is your starter, probably the Bendix in it, thats what went out on mine. Sold it 2 months later and moved on up to this big rig.
