Default 0w-40 oil in sportsman tranny

I have been using Mobil 1 0w-40 oil my my sportsman tranny with great results. I believe the tranny runs cooler and is smoother. I also contacted Amsoil about their 2000 chain case oil, and the tech stated that the Amsoil 2000 chain case oil was a great product due to the fact that it protected parts under high presure. I then asked him the weight of the Amsoil 2000, and he stated that the weight was 5w-30. I then proceeded to ask him if a 0w-40 weight oil would protect under the same presure, and he stated yes. I then asked him about the difference in oil weight, and he told me that actually a 0w-40 would coat and protect moving parts better than a 5w-30. I personally thought this was some great info especially comeing form the Amsoil tech.

If it was better Polaris would have spec'ed it for the tranny, right? The tranny is just a chaincase.

Do you really think Polaris has the best oil money can buy?

Do you really think Polaris wants your ATV to last forever?

Excuse my naivety, but can you really run engine oil in the transmission?? I've never heard of it, but I'm fairly new to this ATV'n stuff.

Yes.

Good synthetic motor oil works very well in a Polaris trans. It is better than the crap Polaris sells.

Why do you say that all of the Polaris oil is crap? What evidence do you have to prove this? Not being a smart a$$, just wondering. I agree that there may be better oils, but I wouldn't say there is anything wrong with the Polaris stuff. I don't think $10 a year for synthetic tranny oil is that expensive.

I service Polaris ATV's on a regular basis for many people. I have been doing this since 1992. I have never has to tear down any Polaris trans that was running synthetic motor oil that I put in it.

Many of these are really high mileage quads.

ALL of the Polaris trans that I have had to rebuild or replace chains in were running Polaris lube. Some of them wore out quickly.

ALL of the four stroke Polaris engines that I had to replace cams on for customers were running Polaris oil. I have never seen a Polaris 4 stroke engine wear out a cam running Castrol Syntec oil.

I really don't give a damn what you people use in your trans or your engine. I only offered good advice and was trying to help out with my experience.

If you don't wish to take my advice then feel free to ignore it.

If you want your trans to last a long time you will fill it with Castrol Syntec 5w50 or any other really good synthetic motor oil.

I have to say I found the Polaris 0w-40 motor oil to be thin watery crap after only 60hrs of running time and was not impressed. I switched to Amsoil 0w-40 Four Stroke and find my motor runs cooler and quieter and at 100hrs the oil is dirty but still has substance to it. Amsoil markets this oil as a synthetic four stroke with a winter rating of 0w, which is the best rating, and a 40 weight for heat and also good for ATV's with shared crankcase tranny cases. So would you not say this oil would be a better oil for the Polaris transmission than a conventional synthetic motor oil???
