lightened flywheel on stock machine, clutch spring advice
#1
Hey guys-
I'm thinking about getting my flywheel trail lightened, but would like some advice on how it will effect a basically stock machine. My only mods are listed below. I would also like to change the clutch spring for a little higher engagement. What would be a good spring? I'm pretty sure it has the Blue/Green spring stock.

Get you a pipe and matching clutch kit before you mess with the flywheel. And if you are going to stay stock just get you a Polaris geen primary spring.

why not go with the lightened flywheel first? It is fairly inexpensive compared to a pipe and clutch kit, and from what I've read, does nothing negative to performance.

pipe and clutch kit will give you more bang for your buck thats what Ftwflh is trying to get at. Fly wheel lightening isn;t a bad idea and your correct there is no negative, but that money towards a pipe would be better, You can find pipes on ebay pretty frequent.
Are you worried about getting a pipe becuase of changing the piston? or loosing lowend power? If so change the piston anyway, my skirt cracked off and my bike was pretty much stock no pipe. even with the aaen top end I didn;t notice a loss worth caring about down low.
for the cost of lightening I say get a wisco and deck the head for premium fuel if your looking for some more kick.

I bought the ATV with a brand new ceramic piston installed, and I have just got the piston broken in. I would like to avoid an aftermarket pipe since areas of WI are really starting to enforce excessive noise. Also, HPD doesn't make a pipe to fit my 95 Sport 400, and I'm not sold on HSP or AAEN pipes. The 95 Sport is the old Polaris bodystyle and has the muffler integrated with the pipe. I'm not worried about losing lowend power since I don't do a whole lot of slow technical riding. I'm trying to get good performance for trailriding and riding fire lanes.

we ride the same, trails and blasting down fire roads.
The AAEN is loud as are almost all of them except the FMF.
I don;t see any reason why not to lighten the fly wheel, I don;t think its actually any more horse power just throttle response. When I was going down this same road I had other suggest I get a flat slide tm carb or a 35-36PWK just to give you a suggestion or too.
white spring or green spring would be good for the primary, I would go green myself. Another great choice is an EPI orange but the engagement is higher then stock.

When I had my 96 400 Sportsman I put the Aaen clutch kit in it before I did the pipe and it worked great. It is a Aen green primary spring ans Aaen blue secondary spring and this worked with a stock motor.

i also have been thinking about having my fly wheel lightened. i like the idea of more throttle responce and quicker spin up but are there any draw backs? i am also coinsidering a bigger carb like what conig said but i am not sure if i could get one tuned right and if i would get much out of it to be worth the hastle. lastly i have heard alot of people talk about clutch kits being the best way to get power to the ground. i have a red clutch spring now but have been wondering about the team roller secondary. i know a pipe kit would do wonders for my bike but i dont want the extra noise. (yet) i have had the engine ported polished and bored so there is nothing more to do there.

Sorry man, I don;t know enough about the trail boss to anwser your question.
the down side to lightening a fly wheel is that it can make the engine begin to bog under load such as going up a hill, It seems alright to lighten them in a polaris since there is so much weight in the driven clutch.
A bigger carb most likly wouldn;t give much in a 4 stroke unless there was exhaust work to help it flow out as well.
