Default Lt80 mods needed for a grownup

OK everyone, first a confession. I bought an lt80 for my kids but I have so much fun on it that I sorta took it over.

I am 6ft 6in tall and 220lbs, the thing moves pretty good but I worry I am killing it. What would be some good things to do to this little beast to make it better for me? I already see the need for some taller handlebars (anyone know where?) but what about things like driveline, clutches and shocks? And how easy would it be to give it a little more oompfh. Maybe someone makes a complete kit for this? I am not afraid to do most things myself but carberators and tuning aren't really my thing. Better to let a pro do that.

Don't worry about the kids, I am already looking for another one for them. The season here in Michigan will be over soon anyway. Come on out there, I can't be the only one that gets a kick out of these things.

Here are some other things. I don't want it louder. I don't want it to be hard to start or high maintenance. Just run, run, run.

Thanks in advance,
Dave

Welcome to the ATV Connection forums.
There is a massive amount of LT80 info here.
300ex bars may work. Works shocks are the norm for aftermarket shocks.
Me and my buds used to have wheelie races on the LT.Small but fun!

Don't feel TO ashamed for having fun on the LT. I sold ours in January of this year, and had talked to a bunch of guys up North that were buying all of these they could and starting a indoor ice racing league. Grown men running highly modded LT80's, on an indoor ice arena, with regular tires! THAT sounds like a blast!! "And if ya got hurt, like, the ice, is right there dude"

Thanks, some interesting info. The suggested (Works) shocks alone cost as much as I paid for the lt80. I have a friend over at Monroe shock absorbers. I think I'll try to get him to cobble something.

I did find a nice replacement handlebar for less than $60 with more lift so I will try that.

The same place with the higher handlebar makes a chain/gear/chain tensioner combo that is supposed to improve preformance. Anyone try it?

Has anyone had experience with the widening spacers? I think I could make those if I could got a good picture. Width doesn't seem to be as critical as suspension travel and firmness...yet.

asfasasu3, I guarntee this thing will get ice raced this winter, as long as I can start it in the cold. I might even make a set of tires with machine screws for grip. That's what we did when we were kids at least, builds up your wrists good too. (dad was too cheap to get a cordless drill back then)

Another quick question. What is the horse power of the stock engine? Anyone know?

If you pick up the latest issue of ATV 4 wheel Action magazine (sept 05) It has an ad for JTATV and it shows a good picture of the spacers. A guy I met in Tug Hill told me about them. He said he put them on but his kid broke them so he went with the longer Axle but that was $300. I bet if you made them out of a stronger material than they did( a composite plastic) you should be fine. I just looks like a couple of doughnuts with 3 studs in them.

Spacers can be easily made with 1" round aluminum and long bolts.

Thanks for all the help so far. Keep it comming.

So far I put on a new handlebar (nice) and I attempted to turn the wheels and tires around for a little more width and found my rears are shot. So off to find some. I will try to find some reasonable stock ones and stay the same size.

Tomorow I will try to hunt down the restrictors. Maybe they are there, maybe not.

That shock thing has me bummed so far. Can it possible cost $600 for 'Works' shocks. Anyone know of something else?

Next I need to paint a skull on the side of my helmet and get a pirate flag for the back. Ha, my neighbors already think I'm crazy.

Also, I will try to burn up the motor so I can get a hopped up one, as long as it still runs I can't justify it.
