AWD Override? (hey loyal!!!)
#2
I believe you are talking about the override button on the left side of the handlebars. Polaris designed the AWD (All Wheel Drive) bikes to not engage in reverse and also engage a power limiter in reverse. The override button gives awd and full power while in reverse. It's a safety feature.

AKScrambler is correct. On a 4x4 Polaris you have to hold the Override button when in reverse to engage the all-wheel-drive. This can be quite a pain in certain situations.
On older machines (those with circuit boards) the procedure is quite painless to override the AWD button. This will allow you to have AWD in reverse without pushing the button.
I posted a topic some time ago entitled "Vintage Polaris Modifications" (I think) that showed you how to do it.
