What am I looking to pay to have pistion rings replaced?

why do you want to change the piston and rings. it not that old and its a honda you should never have to change the piston and rings on a honda utility unless you realy dont care about it and beet it really bad or you just put a hole lot of miles on her.

well i would agree to that but i bought it used and the other day it started to smoke. It smelled like it was buring oil. So that is why I figured it could be the rings or and value gasket leak.

3 hrs labor plus the cost of the rings and the gasket kit. Will be 4 hrs labor if any valves and seals need replaced. You are looking at $250-550 tops. 550 is assuming you need 2 intake valves and new seals.
Once the shop has the head off, they can tell you if it needs any work.

if you do it yourself, it's easy. that engine is a pushrod engine, so theres no cam chain or cam timing to worry about if you're just taking the cylinder and head off.
but if you want a shop to do it, have them put new rings in, hone the cylinder LIGHTLY, and put new valve seals in. should be good to go, smoking should be gone for a while.
a better job to do though would be to have the cylinder measured and if necessary, bored to the next size, and buy a piston/ring set for the first overbore and replace the valve guides if there are any and replace the valve seals. then you're good to go for a long time.

Do these engines have a crank ventilation system? If they do perhaps something failed and it is sucking oil into the engine. Just a thought. Is the smoke blue or black? Black would mean too much fuel and blue would be oil burning.

Woah, I had my spare 400ex motor built with an 11:1 piston, ported head, new valves, and stage 2 Hotcam for $800 including labor and parts.
Thanks,
Jon

He's no longer in business LOL! I wonder why. He was some old guy that finally retired 2 or 3 years ago. I think he worked on horse and buggy repair before he started on motorcycles and snowmobiles lol ancient.
