Finished rebuilding motor now rattling noise???
#1
I followed the manual exactly while rebuilding my motor and now when its running it sounds like something is rattling in the top end. I'm thinkin maybe the valves might be out of adjustment because i put a drop in grind cam from webcycle cams in. I'm honestly stumped and i'm gettin sick of freakin workin this stupid thing so if you guys know of anything that i should check i would really appreciate some help here. Thx.

Did you check the valve adjustment yet? Another thing I would check is, are you getting oil to the top of the engine? Run it with the rear valve cover plug out and make sure you have oil flow. Check to make sure the cam chain tentioner is holding pressure on the guide.

The motor is getting oil to the top end so i can only think of 2 possible things that could be wrong w/ it now. First thing might be the cam chain, while i was rebuilding the motor somehow the chain got kinked really really bad (don't ask how cuz i have no clue lol) and i had to pry it back apart w/ vise grips. Needless to say it took quite a while to fix that. Or it could be my valves need adjusted. How do you adjust the valves? I've looked in my manual and can't seem to find where it tells you how. Thx.

To adjust the valves there is a screw and a jam nut under the big nut covers on top of head. I dont know what the valve lash is but mine was loose so I tighten till it just touched (no play in rocker arm) and backed it off just a tad. Just to warn you dont have it to tight. Overly tightening it would keep the valve open and it will burn the valve. If it is loose doesnt mean it is loose when warmed up and running. You should see what the lash should be. To do it right you would need a dail indicator with magnetic base. Set it up so it measure the travel(slop) in the rocker arm on valve side. You might be able to use a feeler gage like for spark plugs but I dont thing you can find one small enough. I tried that on my old 400ex and had to use the dail indicator. I cant remember the lash but it was smaller then the feeler gages I had.

Well I found out what was wrong the hard way. Get this, I had just finished adjustin the valves to specs right so I took her out for a little test spin when I noticed that the sound didn't go away, then all of the sudden POW the freakin motor sounded like somebody fired a shot gun. So there I was sittin in shock on the 3wheeler as it coasted to a stop when i realized it was probably my timing chain snapped in two. Boy was I wrong, it turns out the timing chain is just fine and that I guess I didn't tourque the cam sprocket bolts tight enough and they rattled out and were slapping against the cylinder head and somehow cracked my cam sprocket . So now i have to order a new cam sprocket, clean up the places where the bolts were hittin, and re-tap the threads on my BRAND NEW cam . I guess one good thing I can take from this is to ALWAYS check, check, and re-check all your tourque settings on anything you tighten down, but you guys have no idea how pissed off I am at myself right now for making that big of a mistake on a damn good motor. Thx Thrash and Xljimmy for replying to my post, I appreciate the help. Well i'm out later guys.

That is why I always use either blue, or red loctite on EVERY bolt........and I tighten the bolts right away before the loctite drys. and if I dont get a bolt tight enough (for some stupid reason) it wont rallte loose
