Default where is material removed for flywheel lightening?

Hey guys:

I just picked up a spare flywheel for my sport 400 that I would like to get race lightened. I have gathered a limited amount of information but would like to do the machine work myself since I have access to the equipment. I know for the race lightening, the teeth for the electric start are removed. Also, I have read Rick Ritter's flywheels leave the shop at 3 lbs when race lightened. Anybody have before and after pics of a lightened flywheel? thanks.

I don't have the equipment to balance the flywheel, but I'm sure it could easily be done by finding the center of the flywheel and balancing it on a cone. Continue to remove weight from the lighter side until the flywheel will sit level on the cone.

you will have to balance the fly wheel after machineing.

the ring gear weighs 10OZ according to my digital. I would suggest you press or knock the ring gear off and you will see there is 3 ear looking things and a metal lip to take off. I am still unsure how they get as much as they advertise.

thanks conig. I have heard that a race lightened flywheel looks nothing like a stock flywheel!

there are pics of them on the HPD website. It may be a 250 model but will give you a general idea.

I did mine myself. Press the gear ring off and chuck up on the I.D. Not to tight, you don't want to break the magnets. I indicated it in on the machined surface for the gear ring. Run lots of coolant and take light cuts. I took it down until the entire O.D. cleaned up and then blended the front radius real nice. It didn't need balanced when I was done. I don't know if I was just lucking or if the mass being so much closer to center made the difference but the balance was dead on. You'll be very happy with the results!

Anybody ever machine their flywheel to trail specs and keep the ring gear? I would like to keep the electric start on mine but machine it myself, do you guys have any specs or ideas?
