Default Change the oil after the 1'st 20 miles Vs. 100 miles

Despite what the owner’s manual said as to changing the oil after the first 100 miles, I changed it after 22.8 miles on my new 06 H1 and I have to say. That I'm glad I did!!!

It was amazing on how much crap came out into my drain pan, not to minchin how much was stuck to the drain plug magnet! I had grit larger than a grain of sand, I had what looked like paint flakes in varies colors. I can't believe they want you to run it for 100 miles with this crap floating around in the engine before changing it.
I tried flushing the oil sump out with a quart of oil before filling it back up, but I think I may just change it again after another 20 miles or so!

I know a lot of you guys are probably thinking the filter will collect it before it gets recycled! But just imagine what it's doing to the oil pump and bearings! As well, a lot of engines (at least high performance engines) bypass the filter during high RPM's to keep up with the demand!

Either way.... there's a lot of foreign debris left in there during production!

So my two cents are; I would change the oil on a new machine sooner than later!

Simply amazing!

Tat's what the crankcase, magnetic drain plug and oil filter are for. Anything that big, if it doesn't sink to the bottom of the crankcase, will have to go thru the oil filter before it reaches the engine and will be filtered out. That's part of the reason to have a crankcase, addition filtering, beside hold the oil supply.

i go at least 200 miles before my first oil change and have never had any problems always had good strong motors with as much hp as that particular engine would allow. everyone has their own way that they feel is the best for breaking in their machine and if you feel that you should change your oil that often then more power to ya but as bear pointed out it is kinda pointless in my book.

I think it's cheap insurance. You can't hurt a motor by changing the oil too much. With the cost of these machines going up and up, oil prices don't look that bad in comparison.

may I hijack this long enough to ask what type of oil you are using? Does AC need a special oil?

Well...... you all may be right about being pointless, but like pads stated, it's cheap insurance! I know the owners manual says to change after the first 100 miles, but knowing there is crud left in there from production, so much so that the plug magnet was full and I had to flush it out of the sump! I just felt better about getting it out to help keep the oil that much cleaner! And like you said Weez440 I may get 2-3-400 miles on it just fine with out ever having a problem, but if I could get even 1% more performance/longevity out of my machine, a few dollors for clean oil is well worth it!

As to AC using a special oil! I Called AC to find out if they send thier bikes out with synthetic or regular oil in them from the manufature, and they stated they send them out with regular oil and advised not to use synthetics until you have a few hundred miles on it due to break-in time!

I changed mine at 1 hour,10 hours, 20 hours. My riding buddy has a kodiak with 2600 miles and still has the same oil and filter. I'm just waiting any day now to hear him say "It want run"
