A/C Newbie, Question Belt light
#1
Hi folks, new to the forum and I have a couple of questions. I bought a 2004 650V2. It has been running pretty good, only 77 hours on it. Last night, the belt light started flashing and it misses terribly, it was running fine, and stll idles fine. I'm still mixed on my liking of this four wheeler. I'm used to the quick response of most four wheelers. The belt drive is something I have to get used to . Before the light came on, I could hear something engaging and disengaging after I shut the motor off, the mechanic said this was the four wheeler doing a diagnostic on the belt. I also noticed that at low idle and low speeds I could always hear something engaging and disengaging. It would engage when I hit the brakes, and then disengage at about 3mph. If I was just creeping along, the thing constantly being engaging and disengaging which was a little bit annoying, but I got used to it. It felt like there was adrag on the machine until it would disengage, like the belt clutch was being ridden to much. Are all of these things normal, or is this going to hopefully be an isolated incident?

It sounds like you might have gotten bit by the dreaded "limp mode" bug. There has been much written here and on Arctic Chat.com about this problem. It is quite simple to reset if you have the required jumper plug. I received the plug with my machine. If it is the limp mode, you ought to check the belt tension while you are at it. Instructions can be found by searching on the two web sites. I would guess that the engage/disengage that you are hearing is the engine brake. It is normal. There is a shift fork actuated by a servo motor on the drive clutch that engages and holds the clutch engaged when you are decelerating. It is intended to help you with slowing the machine without having to constantly use the brakes. Kind of like you would get backing off on the gas with a manual maching in a lower gear coming down a hill. I use the engine brake and low gear all the time coming down hills. Most of the time, I hardly have to use the brake at all. In my opinion, it is a great feature.

Last night I did the belt reset and that worked, so I've got that going for me, which is nice. I made a jumper out of a short piece of wire and two small forked ends. I just put one of the prongs into the slot on each side. I'm going to call the dealer and let him know that this happened, I've read on other forums that this is a common problem and can be reduced by adding a noise reducer. Now I'm curious about the belt. I did smoke the belt once this summer trying to pull a big rock out of my yard using the winch and going in reverse. Other forums mention taking out a shim and adjusting or replacing springs. I'm not sure what they are talking about, is there anywhere to access a diagram of this? I've never owned a fourwheeler before but I'm good with tools(was a light duty mechanic for four years) and want to do as much service as possible on the machine myself. If I remove the belt cover will it be fairly obvious what they are talking about, or will it look like a foreign lanquage to me?
I have now accessed both websites, they are awesome!!! The knowledge of the machines on hear has already helped me learn alot. Thanks in advance.

For some great information you can go to the ArcticChat site and do a search in the Performance / Technical Info section for "belt shim". it will give you 60 plus pages of comments to read through. It mentions in there to go to http://atv.dnsalias.com/techtip.cgi?viewti...airie&viewtip=1 for detailed information on how to make sure the belt is properly adjusted. You have to register on that site to get to it. But that shouldn't be a big deal. I agree with you that both of these sites are full of great information and a great group to have contact with about ATVs. You will encounter a lot of the same people on both sites. Good luck with your belt adjustment.

take off the belt cover and there is a bolt that goes through your secondary cluth (the back clutch) there are 2 shims when you take the bolt out remove the larger of the two. and it wouldn't hurt to buy a new belt while you are at it and may i suggest going with psi clutch springs a black one for secondary and a pink one for primary that should take care of your belt woes. as for limp mode if you got an extra 240 dollars get a dynatek cdi i think the websight is dynaonline.com and you will never have to worry bout limp mode again and you will gain some very nice horsepower in the process then you also don't have to worry bout hitting the override button to go into reverse.
