clutch removal for swingarm bearings?
#1
I am in the process for changing out my swingarm bearings on a 2000 scrambler 400 4x4. I have disassembled most of it but it looks like i need to take the primary clutch off also! Is the correct?
i removed the secondary but i think i still have to get the whole back cover off to get to the head of the swingarm bolt. By the way what size socket does it take... 2"or so..... holy cow its huge!
If so can i tap the primary assembly off with a hammer or do i foresure have to have a puller?
Also how hard is it to get the bearings in and out of the swingarm housing?
I would appreciate any help i could get!
thanks

I don't know much about the new concentric types.......on the old ones.....you had to take both clutches off and remove that back black cover. Do NOT remove the clutch with a hammer........you must use a puller........

The front of the swingarm has no bearings, just bushings. You might be able to get to the bolt ,by pulling the back cover out some ,i've done this before. If not you will need a puller to get the primary off.Just pull the back cover out enough to get to the bolt head. The bushings come out very easy.Hope this helps.

you dont need to remove the primary clutch,it just makes things easier..remove the secondary and the 3 bolts behind it,you can then bend the back half of the clutch cover enough to get at the bolt.if i recall youll need a 1 3/4" socket to remove the bolts.the scramblers dont use "bearings" for the pivot point, they use platic bushings and they come out real easy.remember to put some locktite on the bolts when you put it all back together..

Thats exactly what i had in mind was pulling back on that cover but wanted to be sure someone else was successful at it!
Also do you know what size socket it takes? I guess i'll have to go and buy one that size.
I had no idea that they were bushing...I had thought they were ball bearings.Any idea on cost of them?
Thanks again for all the help!!

Seems to me it was a 1"3/4....but I'm probably wrong about that socket size. One thing I do know for sure, is to make darn sure those threads are extremely clean before you use the Loctite. If you really wanna make sure things lock, get some of Loctite's primer. Follow the container's directions, and that puppy with stay assembled til you wanna take it back down.
