Default Best way to stud tires.

Well my stock tires are gonna be done for soon so I want to stud them up for riding in the winter on our lake. The studs come in 1000 pc. bags I that much but what do you guys recommend as far as how many per tire/ lug and what way to install them?

I figured I extremely over inflate the tire so it is stretched out then take a screw gun and screw them in. The deflate to what it needs to be. Also do I only want to put them in the lugs and not the actual tire part right? Will they leak any air? Or do you guys put like silicone on them?

MIke.

I have also read something about retaining nuts, what do those do and do I have to use them?

MIke.
