Default Need advise on a sport 400

I was looking for a used Trail Boss for my wife (2001-2003), she dosen't want to deal with a clutch, and just starting out riding. It seened like the Trail Boss would be good for her to play with. Today I sptted a 98' Polaris Sport 400 for a good price but have no experience in this bike. How are these ATV's, How are they for trail riding? Being a two stoke and 400 I didn't know if it would have "too much get up and go" for her. Any opinions or stick with the Trail Boss?

The 400 Sports are really good bikes. My wife rides basically the same thing but is just called a Scrambler. She had a Trail Boss and hated it so we got her a 400. She loves her 400. My philosophy on this is...you have the power to do anything you want but you don't have to use the power unless you need it. With it being a oil injected bike they hardly ever foul plugs at slow speeds. We personally have never fouled a plug. So I think the 400 would be a great choice for your wife. These bikes really shine as trail machines. Good luck and let us know if you get it.

What did your wife hate about the Trail Boss?
Was she an experienced rider?

No she was pretty much a beginner. She hated that it didn't have any power. We bought ours together and she said "I don't need anything fast" but when she rode mine she was like "can we take mine back and I get one like yours" LOL. Unfortunately we had ridden them for a few days so that wasn't an option. She rode it for another 6 months and then she could stand it no more. So we sold it at a loss and got her a 400 and you couldn't take it away from her unless at gunpoint.

Her bike has a nice seat cover right?LOL

The 400's are great. I wouldn't want anything else for a trail bike. She will get used to a smaller or less powerful bike real fast then want more. If the bike is stock that is great. You can add all the power to it later if you wish.

I forgot to mention that we ride exclusively in the sand so a Trailboss was a big no-no(Not enough power). If you ride in dirt then the Trailboss should be a fine choice.

We rarely make it to the dunes, mostly trails, washes and light mud. Well after showing the pictures to my wife and giving her the pros and cons, she still wanted the Trail Boss. This worked out well, I stumbled on a 2001 Trail Boss, just out it's extended warrantee, serviced/cleaned every 90, only had light use following around his 9 year old. Looked really nice but may need the seat re-covered in a year (the AZ sun is tough on seats), plus included a nice luggage bag for the rear rack,...purchased it for $1900, seemed like a great deal. That may my wife happy, she didn't want to go too high on her ATV since she only will go out once in a while.
I appreciate everyone’s responses.

My dad had a Polaris Xpress 400 which has the same 2-stroke engine and I couldn't get over how quick it was. Definetely has to be one of the fastest ute quads ever made. I would assume the Sport 400 is lighter and consequently faster so....hold on!
