Default Sluggish 05 700 EFI

Wow, this is a great site. I just bought an 05 700 EFI (used with only 102 miles on it) and I don't seem to be getting the top end speed people suggest that I should. A few days ago I could only get about 50mph out of it and then it would sputter abit. I tried again the next day and the sputtering wasn't really appearant but the top end speed was about 53-54mph. That's plenty fast enough for me, but while there is still some warranty time left I think I should get it checked out. Any ideas? What should I expect for a top end speed from this machine? Thanks for the help.

You should see around lower to mid 60's top speed. If its still under warrenty I would take it back in and tell them about the sputtering.

Thanks for the link. I have check for error codes and see none but I will have to mention the potential coil isssue to the dealer if they aren't able to come up with anything. Thanks again.

My 04 700 twin (non efi) tops out at 67 with 27 inch mudlights on it. It sounds like a good dealer issue..

good luck

Sure thing. My bike didn't generate an error code (something the dealer figured was gonna be their saving grace)... but the thing did sputter at the wrong times (high altitude/speed)... it also freaked out after going through a puddle just past the floorboards. The link above describes how to investigate the coil or wire as the culprit.

I started that link, not that there are many problems with the machine, quite the contrary, but I figured if I could have some people avoid some problems, then it would be helpful...

the error code won't necessarily show up, it depends on how much it is arcing....if only somewhat, then I doubt you will see an error code....

one way to tell is if you can hear a clicking noise at higher RPM's....also, look at the coil at night and rev the motor and see if you can see any arcing....also, grab the coil and see if you can rotate it by hand...if you can, remove the two plate mounting bolts and when you get it off, then tighten the bolt through the center of the coil as it is also a working chassis ground and the reason why it will arc out of the plug wire at the coil...

I get in the low to mid 60's on my machine, I've had it up to 68 mph, but that was a slight downhill....I did all measurements using my Garmin GPS....

my 02 carbed topped the speedo at 60 and kept going with the stock tires. with the 27's.
im scared to go over 50, hehe.

i think the plug wire, or the coil is your ticket.
do you ride in water?
does the sputtering get worse, or feel like a loss of power in water?
mine is doing the same thing. ive ordered some new ignition goodies to take care of the problem hopefully.
good luck!
