Raptor vs. DS650 shootout- ATV Action Dec.2000

Hooray !!
Just read my issue....Awesome !!
Raptor prevails in woods, drags, mx, and DUNES
All time favorite quote from the mag. that will go down in history :
and I quote " So, after challenges from the Banshee, 400EX and DS650, the Yamaha Raptor 660R is the last quad left standing, and it is, WITHOUT QUESTION, the best high-performance ATV you can buy."
Pretty bold statement from a mag, but I will cherish it always. Sounds like my money was well spent in Sept...and I must agree.
Cheers

I just referenced my December magazines, and since you believe everything you read in them, heres what the December Dirtwheels say in their shootout, word for word:
on suspension: The mighty DS also sports the most suspension travel.
on HP: We found that the DS does indeed have more HP on the top end, it came in at 43 HP, while the Raptor puts out around 38 HP, the higher power output of the DS gave it an edge in acceleration.
on trails: the nimbleness of the Sportrax 400 made it the lightest and easiest to handle off jumps, everyone liked how the Honda felt on the track. When all three machines were run on a tight MX track, to everyones surprise, the Sportrax 400 EX was the winner, the Raptor took second.
on duning: on the sand drags, the DS hooked up and pulled out a slight lead over the Raptor in repeated runs.
overall reliability: Another early problem we had with the Raptor was we bent the axel severely after several admittedly high jumps. We were surprised this happened with a high performance machine.
Read 'em and weep
I think I understand now, thanks

All I can say is after the DS650 wins a drag race the thing to do is have a jump off .....raptor owners dont forget
the spare axles/upper a-arms .Seems to me the DS650 is reliability/strenght WINNER...no mag article EVER reported bent/burnt problems with the"MIGHTY DS650".!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dose one forget the ATVSport runs using a Stalker Radar w/computer software
(one of the top systems avail) where the Banshee
was able to tie the DS 650 in both the Sand and on Hard Pack, I guess not.
Even in the DirtWheels shootout the Raptor still won the Drag Race and Overall.
I can recall a DirtWheels Shootout which said the 400 Sport's top speed is 63.5 MPH and the Banshee clocked in @69 MPH, of course the methodology used
to attain said figures was never stated, ATVSport using a Stalker Radar Gun had the Banshee
@71.5 MPH and the 400 Sport @60.5 MPH.
As far as Dyno(L.O.L) runs, I have seen 2 different H.P. stats for the Banshee in the
same issue of DW, with a 3< H.P. varance,
I am not cutting down DW or the Sport 400,
just pointing out things others may have missed.
I am sure Dynojet will test both(DS and Raptor) and hopefully
post the results on their site, I can remember it was they who put the end to Polaris claming the
Sportsman posessed more H.P. than the Grizzly(they
make the Dynos most used in the U.S. so I would suspect they can work them best).
Keep Cool

D'oh I almost forgot, ATVSport did in it's Raptor
test that the DS dose run stonger in 1st Gear, but once out the Raptor takes over, of course
they say the Radar #'s prove it.
All in All 2mags backing the Raptor, 1 for the DS
(and the Raptor did post better Drag times and Win
overall)
Which Quad is better?
Whatever the Person buying decides on.
