Ace Swinger arm install
#1
Well I am getting ready to order my +4 swing arm and have a question for all of you that have installed them. I remember reading about a bearing or bushing that you had a hard time getting out of the stock Swingarm. Most everyone advised just getting new ones.
By looking at the repair manual pics of the parts I assume you are talking about the needle bearings and bushings for both sides???

Yeah, they are the bushings at the pivot on both sides. I like my Ace Fab +4 but on my '05 they got the shock mount wrong. It raised the a$$ end up about 1 1/2" which changed my seating position a bit and changed my handling characteristics and not for the better. The '05's have a different stock swingarm than previous years so maybe it won't be a problem for you. I am getting ready to have the shock mount lowered because it bothers me soo much.
Get new bushings. Even if you get them out they will probably be damaged.

Actually I am not sure, my DS had only 10 hrs on it when I changed my swingarm. Mine popped right out. My buddy had to replace his and he bought everything new. If they are fairly cheap I would. If not you can try to force them out and only replace what is damaged. I remember mine coming out all in one piece for each side for some reason. Maybe someone who has ordered these pieces new will chime in.
Good Luck.

My stock bushings came right out, no problem. I had purchased new ones just in case there was a problem .They were $24 EACH!! SOOOO I used the stock ones, they worked just fine, and returned the new ones. The dealer was actually cool about the return.
I did have a bit of a problem putting the bushings into the swingarm. Some power coat got inside the housing. Got out the Dremel, took care of that, Bushings went right in.. +5 and love it.

I have another question. I was told today by a local Bomb dealer that i would need a special tool to remove the rear hubs. Is this true? the person tried to tell me the tool is like $100. i got the feeling they were trying to convince me to let them do the work rather than me do it myself

ya talking about the rear wheel hubs? if a 36mm socket and breaker bar is a specialty tool than ya may need to order one- really not a big deal at all. If you are removing the axle from the rear of the swing arm, you'll need a large pair of snap ring pliers.

No special tool that cost 100 dollars. Just a big socket and something to pull the cotter pin out with. Maybe a cheater bar if they have never been removed. I got my socket from Sears for around 10 dollars or so. Might want to have a friend around to help break it loose or a good impact. There on pretty good.
