Default Why turn off gas petcock?

If you have your bike parked in storage but do start it and exercize the motor weekly, is there any advantage to turning the gas petcock to the off possistion. I just leave mine in the on possistion. If the gas petcock is turned to the off possision and the valve is closed, in the winter ice cold could the gas in tube expand and crack? Thats my fear.

Yes, and no.

Turning the petcock off, prevevts potential problems such as (but not limited to) fuel flooding the engine because of a bad float, or a needle and seat that leak.

The freezing point of fuel is somewhere around 90 degrees below zero. I doubt that Virginia gets that cold, so no, it won't harm the fuel lines.
