Default Changing Front Differential Oil - Does it need to be in 4wd?

My original plan was to jack up my Brute 650, run it in 4wd to get the front diff fluid heated up, drain it and then re-fill it.

I might just skip running it in 4wd and drain it cold unless anyone sees a problem with this.

But my real question is when I'm putting in the new diff oil, I read on this forum that I should rotate the front wheels by hand while pouring it in so as to make sure the oil gets sucked down into the gears. Should rotating the wheels be done while in 4wd or 2wd or does it not matter? Wouldn't it be hard if not impossible to hand turn the front wheels if in 4wd?

Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.

As long as you put enough oil in the diff there is no need to rotate the wheels.

When you rotate the front tires the gears still turn inside the differential. Going into 4wd just engages the front drive shaft to turn the gears. Therefore you only need to be in 2wd to turn your fronts for oil purposes, and yes, you turning them helps to get the amount of oil in that you need. I would add some oil, roll the quad forwards and backwards, wait a minute or so to see if the oil comes up to the bottom of the threads, and then add some more if need be. Read in your manual how much the front diff holds and then you will have a good idea of how much you need to get in there. Hope this helps, good luck.

Thanks, hollowcd. You are right on.

I had the quad up on a lift with the front right wheel off so I could access the fill hole. I poured and turned the front wheels by hand turning the front hub as the oil got sucked down. It took a little while but it all went down. No problems.
