Convert Kauzma 110 to 50cc
#1
FYI:
I successfully converted a Kazuma Lacoste 110 to a 50cc ATV without spending a lot of money. My son is big for his age and outgrew his Meerkat and I wanted to get him a bike his size but didn’t want to violate the 50 -70 rule for 6 to 12 year olds. It turns out the Meerkat 50cc engine has the same bolt pattern as the 110 and the engine aligned perfectly on the frame. I removed the counter sprocket from the 110 and it fit onto the 50cc. The exhaust and the 110 intake manifold & carburetor bolted up the 50cc engine. The wire plug for the 110 did not match the 50cc but the wires where the same color and new connectors had to be installed. Started right up and my son was outside sliding around in the snow last night.
The problem is that it is geared wrong. I need to change the drive sprocket to a smaller one and the rear sprocket to a few teeth bigger for more power. I had the ATV up to about 50 mph and still had one gear left. I need to put the power in the lower end since the engine is geared for small tires. Also it had no power in the second and third gear with me on it. I could crank first gear up to 20mph with power though.
I also noticed I could take the 50cc cylinder and head and bolt it right up the 110 since the cylinder and head bold pattern are the same size. This should work providing the timing chain is the same and wrist pin will work on a 50cc piston. I will take the 110 apart today to see if this is possible. I will keep post my findings.
Total cost: $150 for a 50cc engine I bought on Ebay.

Update:
Does anybody know if I can buy a larger sprocket for the rear? I have a 30 tooth now but need at least a few more teeth to make this work well. ATV is a little too slow out of the hole but does fine once it’s rolling.

Hey there,
I'm new to ATVs and this forum. What 50-70 rule are you talking about? It seems I may have violated it already and we haven't even gotten the kids ATVs delivered.
I have a 4 yr old and a 7 yr old and have just ordered 2 mini 90s kazumas from raceway. Have I gotten the wrong size? I'm thinking so long as it has the restricter on it and we use it we should be ok. Am I right?

There is no rule or laws . However there are guidelines that people should follow but may not pertain to everyone. I cant put my 7yo on a 50cc atv because his knees hit the bars but I would not put him on a 250cc either. The 90cc will be too big for your 4yo but fine for your 7yo. I would have started the 4yo on a 50-70cc. He may not be able to use all the controlls like brake handle. My son is 7 and he is on a 110 and fits perfect. If the 4yo rides it keep it limited back. I think the 4yo would be better off with the kmx 50. My 4yo is still in a power wheels sportsman.

Thanks for your reply. I was told the mini 90cc kazuma was the identical size to the XL50cc and that the only difference is its faster but can be controlled down to 5 mph and that it can carry a heavier person.
We found a local dealer (just yestuday) after we had placed our order with raceway.com and had both the kids sitting on the mini 90cc, the 4 yr seemed to fit well. He was able to grip the hand brake although I think it may have to be modified, I'm not sure if this can even be done or not.
We actually had wanted the XL50cc for the 4yr old thinking he would get more use out of it then the KMX, but it was sold out already from race way. The KMX 50cc didn't offer the remote control kill switch or alarm this is why we were wanting the XL50cc.
Our 4 yr old is 40 in. tall and weighs about 40 lbs. He's worn out the JD gator/peg perego and a heavy duty battery quad we picked up last xmas from the tractor supply store. He would rock it as he drove it to try and make it go faster. Wheels worn out and forever wearing out the batteries is what brought us to look at the mini ATVs. We even looked at the minimoto but decided it looked to cheap and wouldn't hold up to our kids constant daily use.

The problem is you don't live in NJ. The law here clearly states if you child gets caught on an ATV larger then his size you are in trouble. And if he/she gets hurt, you will get prosecuted. I don’t know if it was ever enforced but I work in local government and not in a position risk it. I bought him a Yamaha PW80 for Christmas because the law doesn’t apply to dirt bikes. Besides where we ride is on a farm and its flat, so he doesn’t need a big engine. I know it sucks but he will have to deal with it.

How big is your son? Just trying to make a comparison with my son. He's 4 yrs old 40 in tall and weighs about 40 lbs.
We ordered the mini 90 cc and I'm concerned it may be to big for him. He fit fine in the seat in the store but after reading this forum it seems the 50cc KMX may be a better choice. Do you know if raceway.com will cancel an order. We just ordered it Friday.

I would call John first thing. I think he will understand your delema. I also think you are making the right choice. The 50 is a good little quad. The only other thing I can say is if they like to ride in the snow you will have to follow them and push when they get stuck. They dont have reverse to back out of a hole.
