Raptor Big Bore Kits & FMF Power Bomb
#1
Did anyone see the 4-wheel atv article on the big bore kits available for the Raptor in the US?
Also, FMF's ad said 10 peak HP gain with Power Bomb Header and Power Core IV exhaust. They must be referring to a Califonia model, right??? Some other mods must have been done?

I received and put on the FMF Power Core exhaust this week. It sounds great but I will see how it performs tomorrow on the dunes. I have the Power Bomb pipe on order. FMF told me that the increase is due 25% to the pipe and 75% to the silencer. I didn't ask on the total increase in HP but I saw the same ad.

"Bike Worx of Maynard, Massachusettes, has well proven, stock bore, high compression piston kits, plus 673cc, 686cc and 724cc big-bore kits based on its performance packages for motorcycle versions of Yamaha's five valve 660. Modified versions run anywhere from 48HP to 75HP. Prices range from as little as $325 for a high compression piston for the do it yourself type, on up to $2000-3500 for those who ship their motor to Bike Worx. ATV Action will be testing the first 724cc Raptor. Bike Worx: (978)897-0044"

I don't know about you guys, but if I buy every performance mod out there for my Raptor, I'll shoot myself, as I'll have more money wrapped up in my toy, then my main mode of transportation, my Truck.
I think that it's great all of these after market companies are making these upgrades for the quads, but truthfully, I think we are headed for trouble. If you traveled back in time, and told some one from Dirt Wheels in 1990 that you had a 45HP 660 4-Stroke Quad with reverse, they would have called you a liar, and drooled at the same time, and now, we as riders want to make them even faster?
The unfortunate fact remains that if we as a whole continue to add horsepower modifications to ATV's we will infinately increase the possiblities of people getting seriously hurt or killed on them, and that will be plain bad for the sport.
Scooby, I know you like your supercharged, blown, warp speed 1 achieving DS 650, but how often do you NEED that power? (To avoid being called a hypocrite, I bought the Raptor because it had Reverse, and was a four stroke shifter quad, not because it was the biggest, and most powerful)
While I admit, I did add $1250 in performance modifications to my 2000 400EX, it still only had roughly 37 HP, and was plenty fast for me. But come on guys, were looking for 78HP four wheelers that sit 9 inches off the ground? We should all be acting responsibly, especially in today's sue happy society. I think it's great that you guys have what you have, and take pride in your quads, BUT, how much horsepower and torque is enough?
In all honesty, how long before we have modified our ATV's to the point that they are purely off road trucks with out the benefit of roll cages, doors, and windshields.
Sorry to drone on with this, but I think it is a serious matter. What happens when you get sick of your 78HP four wheeler, and choose to sell it.....and some unsuspecting wannabe buys it, and get's hurt badly. A friend of mine had this happen with his snowmobile, he modified it, and was able to see 100 plus on it, and sold it to the first taker with 1000 bucks, and two weeks later, the kid was paralyzed, too inexperianced to ride a sled that powerful. I fear that could be the future of our sport........

You're right. I'll act responsibly...78hp, that's ridiculous. I'll put the alba supercharger on my shee.100 rear wheels hp. That's more serious isn't it?
I feel bad for the paralyzed guy. I know that a whole bunch of power wouldn't kill me since I'm quite careful (yes!!18 and careful...isn't that great?), especially in wood trails, but even if I use 100 hp once per ride, that would still be a blast (and 6000$ in the garbage).
