sportsman drive clutch help
#1
I am replacing the drive clutch on a 2002 EBS sportsman 500 this is the second clutch on this machine and so far I have not been able to rebuild them or shim them properly for them to last any more then a five hundred miles before they start to creep and finally start to kill the engine when braking.
This is a common problem with these machines and what seems to be happening is the faces seem to wear in the lower part as well as the ridges on the clutch Sprague seem to round off on top wear the belt rides.
I was thinking of going to a softer belt compound but wasn’t sure if which one to use. Also I have left the stock spring in all these units and was wondering if anyone was using anything else then the blue one.
All these machines are stock, center to center is correct and offset is checked. I also have had motor mounts cause the creep in the past but this is not the problem with these units.
I was looking for a little input

Never had that problem, I always put a lite spring in drive clutch so it would creep while in gear. Keep quad in netural when not moving. Use low side when driving slower.
A friend in ND, had 23K miles on his '02 Sportsman and has the same clutch.
I used the Dayco belts. They work fine on Polaris but come apart on the Kawasaki.
