cleaning oem air filters
#4
The best way is to buy the two bottles at the Honda dealer. Cleaner, and filter oil. Follow instructions on the bottles. If you change to a K&N your jetting should be changed or you will run lean, bad for the engine.

K&N's are for the street. Avoid them like the plague for off-road.
It's pretty simple. I spray the dirty filter with PJ1 Foam Filter Cleaner. Let it sit 15 minutes, then rinse FROM THE INSIDE OUT with warm water. Squeze it out (but don't wring it), and let it air dry. Don't forget to reoil it. My preference for oil is Maxima FFT.
You can use just plain old dish soap as well, but it doesn't work as good.

Its not a big deal to clean the filters, heres a couple of links to articles on how to.

And i agree, if the quad is going offroad, stick with the foam filters.

I know the Honda owners manual says to dip it in a solvent, like Kerosene. The reason I don't like this is that it tends to remove the oil, but leave the dirt behind. The reason I like flushing it with water (from the inside out), is that the water carries the dirt out with it.
Actually, the PJ1 has a solvent and detergent together, best of both worlds.
