It's a good starter quad. Sporty, semi automatic tranny. I think you would get bored with it though if you are a speed freak. They're fun to ride wheelies on though.

I owned a 99 recon for 4 or 5 years, and my brother has a 250ex. Both are great starter quads, lots of fun to ride. Honda really nailed the design back in 97 when they started selling the recon, it's a bulletproof design. My only complaint I have is that the top speed is greatly limited by the gearing. I'm sure my recon and the 250ex could hit 58 or 60 if they were geared a little taller, 5th gear feels like it's 3rd gear when you're in a long straight. I think the top speed of the ex is around 53 or 54, depending on tire size. Both of them are surprisingly good for wheelies, much easier to wheelie than my warrior is.

If you're worried about outgrowing it, get a bigger quad like a warrior, raptor 350, 400ex, or if you can find one you can afford, a z400. 350's and 400's aren't too much for a beginner, and have a lot of potential if you ever decide that you want more performance.
